The Role New England Biolabs (NEB) invites applications for a Research Scientist I position within the Molecular Genetics and Genomics Division. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of innovative approaches for mining microbial communities to discover and characterize novel enzymes, with a particular emphasis on high-throughput sequencing and molecular biology methods. How you'll contribute: Develop and apply next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based strategies to identify and characterize enzymes from complex microbial communities. Design and execute experiments that integrate molecular biology, microbiology, and genomics to support enzyme discovery efforts. Analyze and interpret sequencing data to guide experimental decisions and generate hypotheses. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists in computational biology, molecular genetics, and protein biochemistry. Present research findings through internal reports, cross-functional meetings, and scientific publications. Contribute to the continuous improvement of workflows, protocols, and analytical pipelines. Required Qualifications and Experience: Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genomics, Biochemistry, or a related field with at least 2 years of Postdoctoral experience. Demonstrated expertise in next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies and applications. Strong background in molecular biology techniques (e.g., cloning, library preparation, nucleic acid manipulation). Proven ability to design, execute, and analyze complex experiments independently. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong problem-solving ability, curiosity, and motivation to work in an interdisciplinary environment. What will make you stand out: Experience with metagenomics, microbiome analysis, or enzyme discovery pipelines. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools for analyzing NGS data. Track record of scientific publications and/or patents. Experience mentoring or supervising students, interns, or research staff. Estimated base salary hiring range for a Research Scientist I, $81,000 - $95,000 Base salary is one component of our generous total rewards compensation package.
