Animal Care Manager and Environmental Educator- Small Mammals, Reptiles, Birds of Prey REQ

Job Summary
The Animal Care Manager plays a pivotal role in ensuring the health and well-being of animals under our care. This position involves overseeing daily operations of Animal Care, and providing exceptional care to a variety of animals. The ideal candidate will have a passion for animal welfare, strong leadership skills, and the ability to communicate effectively. The Animal Care Manager also teaches a variety of educational programs using our animal ambassadors.

This position reports to the Education Program Manager.

• Responsible for the care and upkeep of teaching animals and their respective displays and enclosures.
• Maintain animal care logs and weekly check sheets to ensure all tasks are being completed.
• Maintains overall cleanliness and sanitation of the animal care facilities.
• Maintains and creates educational signage for animals on display.
• Manages all AC supplies.
• Researches and adds enrichment to enclosures to improve mental health of animals.
• Manages animal care volunteers and interns to optimize efficiency, ensure the highest standard of animal care, and engage volunteers to have active and meaningful role at NCNC.
• Check in regularly with Education Program Manager, sharing needs and projects for animal care as well as developing action plans for old and new projects.
• Transportation of animals to and from veterinarian visits
• Work with Executive Director and Education program Manager on the acquisition of new animals
• Work with Education Program manager and Director of Finance to create and Maintain the Annual Budget.

Environmental Education Duties

• Teach, lead and coordinate Nature Center programs on a wide variety of natural science topics both on and off site throughout the school year for school and other groups from PreK-adult ages
• Be adept at teaching with all NCNC live animal ambassadors for programs
• Working with Education Program Manager and other EE’s, develop new and innovative education programs and activities for school and other groups
• Assist with the support and training of Center intern(s) and volunteers
• Work with event coordinators to provide support for and implement events

This is a brief summary description of the responsibilities of this role. Additional unlisted tasks needed in order to fulfill the obligations of this role may be required. Additional tasks may be assigned by the Executive Director.

The Nature Center’s regular open hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. As the Animal Care Manager you will work a schedule of Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 to 4:30. At times, this position requires a need for work extending beyond our regular open hours. Flex time will be used to offset these hours, dependent on schedules and with supervisor approval.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

• Considerable experience (3 or more years) working with and caring for live animals, including birds-of-prey, reptiles, small mammals, and a range of invertebrates.
• Strong interest in animals and making a difference.
• College degree or equivalent experience in biology, zoology, or another related field preferred.
• Working knowledge of word processing, excel and current technologies that relate to animal care.
• The ability to take initiative and work alone or as a team.
• Communication skills especially with visitors, volunteers and the general public.
• Ability to coordinate and supervise volunteers and interns in a professional manner.
• Organizational skills and the ability to maintain records and a clean workspace.
• Creative problem-solving skills
• Experience in teaching with animals is a plus.

Pay: $39,000.00 - $42,000.00 per year
