Direct Reports: Client Care Coordinator, midwives; nurses, birth assistants, midwife students
Employment Type: Full-Time / Exempt

Primary Location: Chaska - Flexibility required for Mankato location; primarily on-site with occasional remote administrative work as appropriate

Schedule: Minimum of three 24-hour call shifts and one clinic day per four-week period


Position Summary
The Clinical Director serves as the executive leader responsible for the quality, safety, and integrity of all clinical operations at New Birth Midwifery. As the guardian of clinical excellence and midwifery philosophy, the CD ensures that every client encounter reflects evidence-based care, informed choice, and the organization’s commitment to physiologic birth and holistic wellness.
The CD oversees the clinical governance structure—including quality improvement, risk management, accreditation, and professional development—while mentoring clinical leaders to uphold the highest standards of practice. This role bridges the clinical and executive domains, translating mission into measurable outcomes and operational realities.


Core Responsibilities


  • Clinical Leadership & Vision
    • Lead the design and delivery of all clinical care models across sites, ensuring fidelity to midwifery principles and compliance with regulatory standards.
    • Define and communicate the organization’s clinical philosophy, priorities, and long-term quality goals.
    • Collaborate with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team on strategic initiatives involving service expansion, innovation in care models, and community partnerships.
    • Serve as the organization’s top clinical advisor in matters of risk, ethics, and professional standards.
  • Quality, Safety & Compliance
    • Direct all quality assurance and improvement activities, including peer review, audits, and outcomes reporting.
    • Ensure adherence to state regulations, CABC or other accrediting body standards, and internal Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs).
    • Oversee management of adverse events, sentinel reviews, and root-cause analyses with transparency and compassion.
    • Maintain current, evidence-based CPGs and policies in collaboration with site leadership and regulatory bodies.
  • Clinical Workforce Development
    • Recruit, onboard, and mentor midwives and clinical team members to cultivate clinical excellence and emotional resilience.
    • Establish and maintain systems for competency assessment, continuing education, and skill maintenance.
    • Oversee student and apprentice placements, ensuring compliance with supervision requirements and educational standards.
    • Foster a culture of lifelong learning, reflective practice, and mutual support within all clinical teams.
  • Operational Collaboration
    • Partner with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and site managers to align staffing, scheduling, and workflow with patient volume and financial realities.
    • Ensure accurate and timely documentation, chart audits, and integration with administrative and billing systems.
    • Participate in annual budget planning for clinical operations, supply procurement, and capital improvements.
    • Contribute clinical expertise to business development, new program design, and community partnerships.
  • Client Experience & Community Relations
    • Ensure that every client interaction embodies New Birth’s values of dignity, respect, and empowerment.
    • Collaborate with the communications team to promote community education and advocacy around birth center care.
    • Represent the organization in public, professional, and policy forums to advance midwifery-led models of care.
    • Champion equity, accessibility, and inclusion in all clinical practices and outreach initiatives.


Qualifications


  • Required Education, Licensure and Experience
    • Current midwifery certification (CNM, CPM, or equivalent) in good standing, with prescriptive authority if applicable.
    • Eligibility to maintain or obtain licensure in all states where New Birth operates.
    • Experience and risk management in birth center or out-of-hospital settings.
    • Bachelor’s degree - ideally in a health-related field although not required.
  • Desired Education, Licensure and Experience
    • Master’s degree or higher in Midwifery, Nursing, Maternal-Child Health, or related field preferred.
    • 7 years of clinical experience in maternal–child health, including at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role
    • Proven track record in clinical governance, quality improvement, and multi-site coordination.
    • Experience with accreditation, regulatory compliance, and risk management in birth center or out-of-hospital settings.
  • Desired Skills & Attributes

Compensation & Benefits

  • Starting salary: $100,000 (commensurate with experience) benefits as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Eligible for CEU reimbursement, professional development stipends, and leadership coaching as approved.

Working Conditions


  • Hybrid clinical and administrative work.
  • Requires regular presence at each birth center site, with main location being Chaska Birth Center.
  • Minimal on-call availability as stated above and to help cover other employees PTO.
  • Occasional travel, evenings, or weekends for trainings, accreditation, or leadership events.
