Job Duties

Under direction, independently &/or as part of team performs all aspects of database administration and relational database management system design (i.e.; Microsoft SQL Server); implements new relational system designs; performs routine maintenance to the department’s relational (i.e.; Microsoft SQL Server) tables such as backups, recovery; leads/mentors (lower level staff &/or contract staff) groups in maintaining & developing naming conventions relevant to relational naming standards; assists in the creation of scheduled tasks to run utilities, replication and routing maintenance jobs for development, testing and production databases; makes recommendations to the users for the collection of data to be stored in the tables; maintain/creates schematics, data models (includes dimensional models), and/or schemas for physical databases & provides assistance with the logical data models; makes recommendations to the project leaders, coworkers, and users concerning efficiency of the tables; leads/mentors (lower level staff &/or contract staff) in the database design & implementation of the development database systems; recommends and assists with the testing of new software & new software releases relating to this database platform; create test tables as requested by the users; creates & maintains (lower level staff &/or contract staff) project plans for assigned projects as directed by the administrator; performs tuning functions on user tables to ensure they are running efficiently & makes recommendations for changes as required by the results; leads/mentors (lower level staff &/or contract staff) team to analyze the system tables to gain understanding on any performance issues or system information about the tables; provides programmer support & code reviews for all code accessing relational (i.e.; Microsoft SQL Server) databases, concentrating on the queries embedded within the source code; provides assistance to users & application development with problems/issues pertaining to database administration responsibilities; creates database access & interfaces to production database objects including database links, snapshots, or any others as required; Acts as lead/mentor/member of a team (i.e., team may be composed of information technology professionals, &/or contract staff) of information technology professionals (e.g., database analysts, programmers, systems analysts) in implementation & ongoing development of Microsoft SQL Server database portion of new projects (e.g., assigns tasks & projects; monitors progress (lower level staff &/or contract staff); leads data gathering; evaluates work & provides work direction); performs feasibility studies including time & cost estimates for new projects & maintenance changes as needed; Reports to senior management immediately any impending problems that may have an adverse effect on systems operations; prepares communication documents on technical & non-technical matters; leads meetings & verbally communicates with all aspects of the organization; Creates status reports; performs feasibility studies to include time & constraints for new projects &/or maintenance changes; Trains lower level analysts in implementing test & production databases; answers questions & provide technical information related to database management issues; & Procedures Manual and any other enterprise level standards) in the implementation and maintenance of enterprise applications. Assists coworkers on other relational platforms if the need arises.

Performs Database monitoring activities using native (e.g. Profiler, MOM) & third party tools (e.g. Compuware Vantage Suite.) Works independently on the tuning and design aspects of the medium to large and complex tables; Makes recommendations concerning system performance and monitoring, including tool selection methodologies, and processes. Works with change process to certify that change control processes are being followed.

Performs other related duties as assigned (e.g., attends conferences seminars & workshops; completes on-line training; reads manuals & literature in order to stay abreast of current database management techniques; attends &/or facilitates staff/team meetings; travels throughout Ohio & out-of-state to meet with services providers & related organization).

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of undergraduate core program in computer science or associate degree in computer science; 5 yrs. exp. in systems analysis & design & computer programming using COBOL &/or other high-level language, of which 12 mos. was as team/project leader.

  • Or completion of undergraduate core program in computer science or associate degree in computer information science; 3 yrs. exp. in design & maintenance of date base management system executing on one platform, of which 12 mos. was as team/project leader; 12 mos. exp. in computer programming using COBOL &/or other high-level programming language.
  • Or 12 mos. exp. as Data Base Analyst 3, 64153.
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Supplemental Information

Subject to On-Call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Required to carry a pager/cellular phone as assigned. Required to work overtime including weekends as assigned.

MUST PROVIDE OWN TRANSPORTATION. OR IN ORDER TO OPERATE A STATE VEHICLE MUST HAVE A VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE FROM STATE OF RESIDENCE.
