Job Description

Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Responsibilities

The Senior Nuclear Facilities Operations Specialist serves as a Facility Representative/Explosives Worker at explosives facilities. As an integral part of our High Explosives Facilities (HEF) Team, this role coordinates and performs support activities in collaboration with external and internal partners to attain desired success and sustain operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Facility Representative for the day-to-day operations at assigned facilities located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).
  • Help coordinate facility maintenance and operational activities. Track and deconflict release maintenance and operational work at facilities and assist personnel with support as needed.
  • Conduct facility walkdowns, building access, inspections, rounds, monitoring equipment and implement corrective actions for discrepancies to maintain facility readiness.
  • Ability to be qualified as a Local Emergency Director and perform operational drills and perform abnormal drills for assigned locations.
  • Ability to perform Chemical Custodian duties, maintain calibrations, key control, and official duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of electronic systems (fixed camera systems, lightning detection, etc.) is a plus.
  • Complete assigned tasks on time and within the prescribed budget.
  • Interface and collaboration with external and internal project/laboratory partners and operational management for the assigned facility/project to determine appropriate level and scope of tasks necessary to attain project/operational goals and objectives
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in field related to the position or equivalent training and experience, plus at least 5 years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, which included 2 years’ experience in nuclear operations or nuclear maintenance such as those found at a DOE nuclear facility, commercial power plant, or US Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program; or experience with high explosives handling and operations; or chemical handling, storage, transfer, and controlled release activities.
  • A degree in chemistry, explosives or engineering is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers, ability to make recommendations to other personnel.
  • Must be able to deal effectively with conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated self-starter, decision abilities. Be able to track and complete work activities and tasks with minimal supervision and follow-up.
  • Demonstrated personal accountability, ability to follow written work documents and identify and communicate needed improvements and suggest viable solutions. Must have a great attention to detail.
  • Explosive experience is a plus:
    • Experience civilian or military explosive operations including explosives handling, packaging, inspect, inventory, transportation, assembly, firing site set up, firing and post firing operations, abnormal condition clearance, and/or disposition of excess explosives. and experimentation diagnostics strongly desired.
    • Experience as Explosives Site Supervisor or Firing Site Leader in civilian or military explosive operations, with demonstrated success in the technical management of explosive operations and facilities, and the supervision of these operations preferred
    • Experience in various explosives firing initiation systems (e.g., non-electric, shock tube, exploding bridge wires), DOE Emergency Response Render Safe Programs, and/or operating Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit (EODU), is a plus.
    • Working knowledge of DOE STD-1212-2025 Explosives Safety, Department of Defense and other government agency explosives safety and security requirements to include explosives site plans and facilities and explosives operations, storage facilities.
  • Experience operating powered equipment such as forklifts a plus.
  • Ability to quickly integrate new technology into daily procedures. Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Oracle, and able to use other computing devices, and databases. Knowledge of, ability to use, and capability to implement technical equipment upgrades desired.
  • Ability to work outdoors, in heat or cold, in remote locations, occasional overtime and off-normal work shift.
  • Ability to obtain all qualifications (examples: Local Emergency Director, explosive quals, facility quals, etc.) as assigned.
  • The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 64 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada).
    • This position reports daily to the NNSS and to distant facilities within it.
  • Add Work Schedule (ex: Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday. (subject to change)
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Q-level Clearance Language

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2 , “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709 , “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

Annual salary range for this position is: $96,761.60 - $145,142.40

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
