About The Host Site

The Nevada Department of Wildlife’s (NDOW) Conservation Education division provides wildlife, hunter, angler, archery, boating, and urban wildlife education programs in classrooms and communities throughout Nevada. Through these programs, NDOW reaches thousands of participants each year while advancing its mission of connecting people to wildlife in a positive way.

Position Summary

The Wildlife Educator AmeriCorps Member (the member) serves on NDOW’s Conservation Education team, supporting classroom and community wildlife education programs throughout the Eastern Region (Elko, Lander, White Pine, and Eureka counties). The member will help develop and deliver outdoor education events, clinics, and field trips focused on wildlife conservation, archery, fishing, hunting, and shooting sports. Additional duties include assisting with volunteer recruitment and training, supporting volunteer projects, and providing fieldwork assistance as needed. This position requires a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, as well as frequent travel, outdoor work, and occasional camping in varying weather conditions.

Position Responsibilities

  • Deliver wildlife education programs in schools and communities throughout the Eastern Region.
  • Develop and facilitate engaging educational programs that connect participants with Nevada’s wildlife and outdoor recreation opportunities.
  • Support angler, hunter, and archery education through events, clinics, field trips, and community outreach.
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment, training, and engagement.
  • Support volunteer projects and conservation initiatives.
  • Assist with divisional fieldwork and special projects as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Strong public speaking, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and safely teach others (e.g., firearms instruction).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and occasional long hours.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, natural resources, outdoor recreation, science, or a related field preferred.
  • Must be eligible to serve in AmeriCorps as a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident

Benefits/ Housing

AmeriCorps members receive:

  • Living stipend: $2,066.66 p/month (paid out bi-weekly)
  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (upon successful completion of service): $7,395
  • PTO/USL: 7 paid days
  • Healthcare coverage and access to a member assistance program
  • Professional development and training opportunities throughout the service term
  • Onsite housing is available in a seasonal employee bunkhouse; however, amenities are limited. Facilities include a single 12’ x 12’ studio unit with a full-sized bed, private bathroom and shower, mini refrigerator, and a microwave. A single burner camp stove, community BBQ and Blackstone grill are also available for cooking. Members may seek other housing arrangements in the Elko area on their own, if desired.

Service Expectations

AmeriCorps members must wear approved AmeriCorps identification during service activities and the designated program uniform when facilitating programs. Members must participate in at least one National Day of Service during their term and may have additional opportunities for community service projects.

Evaluation and Reporting

Members will receive regular performance evaluations from both their site supervisor and the AmeriCorps Program Director. Members are responsible for submitting bi-weekly service logs (timesheets) and weekly activity reports.
