Role Description The Dance Movement Therapist/Adapted Dance Instructor is a contract, on-site role based in Fairfax, VA. This position involves planning and facilitating individual and group movement-based sessions that support emotional regulation, motor skills, social engagement, and self-expression. Daily tasks include assessing client needs, developing therapeutic or adapted dance goals, designing session plans, documenting progress, and communicating with caregivers and other providers. The role also includes coordinating schedules, maintaining a safe and sensory-aware environment, and adapting activities for clients with diverse physical, cognitive, and behavioral needs. The instructor collaborates with the clinical team to integrate movement interventions into broader treatment plans and may participate in outreach or community programs as needed.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong skills in Movement Therapy and Dance, with the ability to adapt techniques for various ages, abilities, and therapeutic goals.
- Candidates should demonstrate comfort working with clients experiencing emotional, behavioral, or developmental challenges.
- Candidates should possess foundational knowledge in Psychology, including basic understanding of human development, trauma-informed care, and therapeutic boundaries.
- Relevant credentials such as a degree in dance/movement therapy, psychology, counseling, or related field; certification or registration in dance/movement therapy or adapted dance instruction is highly beneficial.
- Experience working in clinical, educational, or community-based settings with neurodivergent individuals, people with disabilities, or mental health needs is preferred.
- Candidates should have the ability to plan engaging, fun and interactive lessons for children with disabilities, including autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills, with the ability to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team and maintain ethical, client-centered practice.
- Ability to stand, move, and demonstrate activities for extended periods, and to ensure safe physical support within scope of training.
