What are the responsibilities and job description for the Copper Technician – Structured Cabling position at Network Cabling Services (NCS)?
NCS is seeking an experienced Copper Technician to join our team in Houston. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience installing, dressing, terminating, and testing copper cabling systems in commercial, industrial, and telecommunications environments.
Experience building out, dressing, and terminating IDF and Telecom Rooms is required and considered a critical function of this role.
The Copper Technician will be responsible for delivering high-quality structured cabling installations while maintaining company standards for safety, workmanship, and customer satisfaction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Install, route, secure, and support Category 5e, Category 6, and Category 6A copper cabling systems.
- Build out, dress, and terminate IDF (Intermediate Distribution Frame) and Telecom Rooms (Required).
- Install and terminate patch panels, modular jacks, racks, cabinets, ladder rack, cable tray, and cable management systems.
- Perform copper cable terminations using T568A and T568B standards.
- Label, organize, and neatly dress all cabling according to project specifications and industry standards.
- Install telecommunications infrastructure including racks, cabinets, grounding systems, and pathway supports.
- Test and certify copper cabling systems using Fluke or equivalent certification equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair copper cabling issues and connectivity problems.
- Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, riser diagrams, and project drawings.
- Complete punch-list items and maintain project quality standards.
- Document test results and complete project documentation.
- Follow all company safety policies and customer site requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 3 years of structured cabling experience.
- Demonstrated experience building out, dressing, and terminating IDF and Telecom Rooms.
- Experience terminating Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A cabling.
- Experience installing racks, cabinets, patch panels, and cable management systems.
- Experience testing and certifying copper cabling systems.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to pass background screening and drug testing.
Preferred Qualifications
- BICSI Installer or Technician Certification.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
- Experience in data centers, healthcare facilities, airports, industrial facilities, or large commercial projects.
- Experience with telecommunications room buildouts and network infrastructure installations.
- Knowledge of TIA/EIA and BICSI standards.
Pay: $20.00 - $28.00 per hour
