Diesel Mechanic

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work as required. Diagnoses, maintains, repairs, services, inspects, and tests buses and support vehicles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs entry-level vehicle maintenance and repair tasks.
• Conducts brake and tire safety inspections.
• Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI).
• Removes and installs some major components, based on skill set.
• Oils and greases equipment.
• Services and/or repairs some tools and equipment, based on skill level.
• Performs minor repairs on road calls and assists higher-level mechanics when needed.
• Troubleshoots systems to locate causes of simple problems.
• Uses test equipment and typical shop tools, including torque wrenches, jacks, drills, timing lights, tach/dwell meters, voltmeters/hydrometers, and other trade tools.
• Performs simple tests of battery condition and voltage output; may locate and repair minor air leaks, short circuits, or water leaks, based on skill.
• Maintains and prepares records and reports; completes work orders and documentation.
• Operates a computer for data input and retrieval as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned, based on skill, knowledge, and ability.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least one year of experience maintaining automotive or diesel-powered heavy equipment, or equivalent experience in vehicle maintenance/repair.
• Valid California Class C driver’s license.
• Ability to obtain a Class B license with passenger and air brake endorsements, if required.
• Willingness to work weekends, holidays, irregular hours, and respond to road-call assignments.
• May be required to pass a written and/or hands-on skills test.
