This role is designed for a leader who has grown up through software engineering and architecture, understands how modern systems are built and operated, and can earn credibility with engineers while partnering effectively across Product, Data, Clinical, Security, Compliance, and business teams.

The Director will provide hands-on technical leadership and people leadership, helping teams operationalize AI capabilities responsibly while maintaining strong engineering standards, delivery discipline, and platform scalability.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & AI Delivery

  • Drive strong execution across quality, performance, security, reliability, scalability, and operational readiness.
  • Apply modern engineering, DevOps, and MLOps practices to support continuous delivery and production excellence.

Architecture & Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership across application architecture, AI platforms, data pipelines, integrations, and cloud-based systems.
  • Guide architectural decisions and engineering tradeoffs with a practical, hands-on understanding of software development.
  • Establish and uphold engineering standards, reusable patterns, design practices, and code quality expectations.
  • Promote platform thinking to enable AI capabilities that are scalable, sustainable, maintainable, and reusable across solutions.

Product & Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Partner closely with Product Management to deliver AI capabilities aligned to client needs, market priorities, and business outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Data Science, Analytics, Clinical, Compliance, Privacy, and Security partners to operationalize AI capabilities responsibly.
  • Communicate technical strategy, delivery progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to senior technology and product stakeholders.

Responsible AI & Governance

  • Embed responsible AI practices, including transparency, explainability, monitoring, continuous validation, and human-centered design principles.
  • Support AI governance, risk management, privacy, security, and compliance efforts in partnership with leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Ensure AI solutions align with Netsmart’s commitment to trust, safety, responsible innovation, and community impact.

People Leadership & Operating Discipline

  • Lead, coach, and develop high-performing engineering teams with a culture of accountability, collaboration, ownership, and continuous improvement.
  • Recruit, retain, and grow technical talent aligned with Netsmart values, engineering standards, and delivery expectations.
  • Create clarity around priorities, decision-making, execution plans, and success measures to help teams operate effectively at scale.

Qualifications

  • 8 years of software engineering experience, including leadership roles with increasing scope and accountability.
  • Strong foundation as a software engineer, technical lead, architect, or engineering leader with demonstrated ability to guide architecture and engineering execution.
  • Experience delivering AI, machine learning, automation, analytics, or data-driven systems into production environments.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-based architectures, distributed systems, API/integration patterns, AI/ML platforms, MLOps, DevOps, and modern software delivery practices.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a matrixed organization and partner across engineering, product, data, clinical, compliance, security, and business teams.
  • Experience working in regulated industries; healthcare technology experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication, people leadership, technical judgment, execution discipline, and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Background building or scaling AI-enabled capabilities within enterprise software products.
  • Experience modernizing engineering practices, improving platform scalability, or establishing reusable architecture patterns.
  • Demonstrated passion for the future of AI in healthcare technology and the ability to balance innovation with responsible implementation.
