What are the responsibilities and job description for the Financial Analyst position at Neo?
Neo is a technology-focused venture capital firm based in San Francisco. Neo backs ambitious teams with strong technical leadership at pre-seed and seed, and also runs scholar programs, hackathons, an accelerator, bootcamps, and a recruiting and mentorship platform to support the next generation of founders and builders. Neo manages close to $1 billion across four funds, raised primarily from more than 100 industry leaders and tech veterans, and is recognized as a leading early-stage VC platform.
Role overviewNeo is hiring a Finance Analyst to be the second member of the in-house finance team, reporting directly to the Head of Finance. This is a non-investing role at the intersection of fund finance, portfolio analytics, and data, with significant exposure to the investment team, LPs, founders, and the broader Neo community. The ideal candidate is excited to help build the processes, infrastructure, and databases that Neo will use to run the funds and programs, understand the portfolio and network, and support data-driven investment and portfolio decisions. We anticipate that this role will pay between $125k to $150k depending on experience, and the role requires at least three days a week in our office in San Francisco’s Jackson Square neighborhood.
What you’ll do- Support capital call and distribution workflows across Neo’s funds, including modeling capital needs, tracking commitments, and coordinating with the fund administrator and other external partners.
- Attend weekly deal reviews and IC meetings to stay ahead of upcoming investments and capital needs.
- Assist in managing the legal and financial process of closing investments, including coordinating with attorneys, tracking closing checklists and timelines, gathering required company and transaction information, and ensuring final terms are accurately reflected in Neo’s internal records and systems.
- Oversee the end-to-end process of managing portfolio data for Neo, from collecting portfolio financials and KPIs to accurate and timely data input into our portfolio management and internal tracking systems.
- Design, build, and maintain internal systems and dashboards that track portfolio performance, portfolio construction, concentration, and program outcomes, creating infrastructure that the investment team and leadership will use to understand the portfolio and Neo network.
- Contribute to LP reporting and analytics by assembling clear views of fund performance, portfolio composition, and underlying data for LP updates and meetings.
- Prepare financial models and analyses of fund and portfolio performance, including exit waterfalls, follow-on scenarios, and portfolio construction and concentration analysis for internal and external use cases.
- Support budgeting, cash monitoring, and spend analysis for the management company and programs (accelerator, scholar programs, hackathons, bootcamps) to enable thoughtful, data-driven spending decisions.
- Partner with Neo’s external bookkeeper, fund administrator, auditor, and tax advisor by answering data questions, collecting financial and accounting data, and conducting analyses.
- Participate in fundraising activities, including drafting and reviewing internal and external presentations and documents, and providing transactional and operational support.
- 1–3 years of experience in a relevant role such as fund finance/operations, FP&A, transaction services, or a similar analytical position; experience with venture capital, private equity, or fund administration is a plus but not required.
- Strong Excel / Google Sheets skills, comfort with large or messy datasets, and interest in building simple dashboards and databases.
- Highly detail-oriented with strong quantitative and analytical skills; you care about data quality and understand that sound decisions rely on well-structured, accurate information.
- Extreme ownership mindset: eager to help build and document processes and infrastructure from a relatively blank slate, while also handling the necessary grunt work to keep systems accurate and up to date.
- Low-ego collaborator who communicates clearly in writing and in meetings, and who enjoys working with finance, investors, LPs, founders, and external service providers.
- Curious about early-stage technology, willing to try AI to find new ways to accomplish financial tasks and analysis, and excited to help Neo use its portfolio and network data more effectively to support founders and decision-makers.
