Child Health Policy and Advocacy Intern

Job Description

The paid internship supports the Nemours Children's Health, National Office of Policy and Prevention , Policy and Advocacy Team (federal government). The team focuses on several policy areas, including Medicaid and children's coverage, whole child health, mental and behavioral health, early care and education, maternal and infant health, and nutrition and physical activity. Interns become familiar with these and other health policy areas while developing skills in policy research and analysis, writing, organization and government relations.

Qualifications

Current graduate student in public health, public policy, or related field. Strong candidates will have excellent research and writing skills, the motivation to learn about policy topics and an ability to work independently.

We can support students who have practicum or other applied experience requirements for their educational degree.

Hours, Term and Pay Rate

The expectation is to work 14 hours a week with the same schedule each week.

The term is approximately four months (one school semester) with the possibility of an extension.

Internship Duties

  • Assist in background research and analysis to support the development of memos, backgrounders, white papers, issue briefs, fact sheets, and letters to Congress

  • Assist in the development of quarterly newsletters and literature scans focused on whole child health

  • Provide support for communications projects and publications, to include the development of communications materials (i.e. social media posts, internal newsletters) and proofreading and design support

  • Attend (virtually and in-person) and prepare summaries of coalition meetings and other relevant meetings, webinars and various executive and legislative branch activities such as briefings, hearings and markups

  • Assist the team with preparing for congressional lobby days and to attend congressional briefings, convenings and other events

  • Conduct legislative and policy research and help maintain legislative/regulatory tracking processes

  • Provide administrative support to the team, as needed

  • Perform other duties, as needed

Learning Objectives

  • Intern will become proficient at public policy research by providing support to specific advocacy campaigns/strategies and policy development initiatives.

  • Intern will network and establish professional contacts in the healthy policy industry by attending briefings, meetings, etc.
