This position performs tool and die machining, sharpening, honing, fabrication, and maintenance, as well as support for machine modifications, custom tooling enhancements, and small engineering improvements.
Key Responsibilities
Tooling Maintenance & Management
- Manage all plant tooling, including resharpening, honing, reconditioning, lapping, and repair.
- Maintain a structured tool-tracking and inventory system.
- Inspect tooling regularly for wear, damage, and production readiness.
- Recommend improvements to tooling life, performance, and cost efficiency.
- Operate manual and/or CNC machining equipment to fabricate, modify, or repair tooling and fixtures.
- Interpret engineering prints, sketches, and CAD models.
- Machine precision die components, jigs, fixtures, and custom parts.
- Assist with machine improvements, small modifications, upgrades, and enhancement projects.
- Troubleshoot machining or fit-up issues and propose corrective action.
- Support prototype development and test fixtures.
- Ensure all tooling and machined components meet dimensional and performance requirements.
- Perform first-piece checks and adjust machining parameters as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of tooling maintenance, sharpening cycles, and modification history.
- Work closely with machinists, operators, and maintenance to understand tooling needs.
- Provide guidance on proper handling and storage of tooling.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Minimum 3–5 years experience as a tool & die machinist or equivalent.
- Proficient in tool grinding, sharpening, and precision finishing.
- Skilled in operating manual and/or CNC machines.
- Ability to read engineering prints, tolerances, and GD&T.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong time-management and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain a clean and organized workspace.
Physical Requirements
- Standing: Majority of tasks performed standing with intermittent walking.
- Lifting: Frequent lifting 5–15 lbs; occasional up to 75 lbs.
- Walking: Moderate movement within machining/tooling areas.
- Carrying: Occasional carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Bending & Reaching: Regular handling of tools, dies, and materials.
- Handling/Gripping: Frequent handling of small precision components.
- Part-time, up to 32 hours per week.
- Schedule determined based on business needs.
