NAICA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing housing, shelter, and supportive services to individuals and families across the Bronx. Our Community Affairs team works to strengthen resident engagement, support program operations, and connect communities with valuable resources. Interns will gain hands-on experience in community-centered work, direct client support, and nonprofit operations within one of New York City’s leading social service organizations.
Internship Summary
The Community Affairs Intern will support NAICA’s community engagement efforts across our shelters and housing programs. This role is ideal for students who want hands-on experience in social services, program coordination, and community outreach while working directly with residents, staff, and partner organizations.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in planning and supporting on-site community events, workshops, and drives (e.g.,
- resource fairs, holiday events, education sessions).
- Conduct outreach to residents to promote available NAICA services, activities, and community resources.
- Help prepare materials such as flyers, sign-in sheets, surveys, and event documentation.
- Support resident engagement efforts across shelters and housing sites, including distributing resources, gathering feedback, and encouraging participation.
- Assist with front-desk and administrative tasks such as answering phones, greeting visitors, and providing information.
- Collect and organize data from events, resident interactions, and engagement initiatives for reporting.
- Maintain organized digital and physical files for the Community Affairs department.
- Join internal meetings and take notes when requested.
- Support special projects, holiday initiatives, donation distributions, and partner collaborations.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a college program related to Sociology, Human Services, Public Administration, Community Development, or a similar field.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with comfort interacting with families, youth, and individuals in shelter settings.
- Ability to work on-site at NAICA program locations across the Bronx.
- Reliable, professional, and able to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity when working with vulnerable populations.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and comfort using email and digital forms.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks.
Preferred
- Experience in community outreach, customer service, or direct client work.
- Bilingual Spanish/English.
- Familiarity with NYC social service programs or shelter operations.
- Experience with Canva or basic design tools for creating flyers.
