JOB TITLE: Medical Physicist

JOB SUMMARY:
The Medical Physicist plays a vital role in a high-quality, patient-centered approach to care. This position is responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and innovative delivery of radiation therapy, while partnering closely with physicians and clinical staff to optimize outcomes and continuously advance care delivery. This role supports the clinical team by overseeing the calibration, quality assurance, and performance of radiation therapy equipment, while ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards. The Medical Physicist plays a critical role in protecting patients and staff from unnecessary radiation exposure and this role offers meaningful clinical influence, operational agility, and direct collaboration with physician leadership, allowing the physicist to shape both clinical quality and program development.

REPORTS TO: Chief Operating Officer (COO)

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical & Technical Oversight
• Ensures accurate calibration, commissioning, and ongoing performance optimization of all radiation therapy equipment, including linear accelerators and imaging systems.
• Performs and oversees routine and specialized quality assurance (QA) procedures for radiation-producing equipment in alignment with AAPM and best practices.
• Conducts acceptance testing, commissioning, and implementation of new equipment and software.
• Provide expert oversight of treatment planning in collaboration with physicians and dosimetrists to ensure accurate dose calculations and delivery.

• Reviews and verifies treatment plans to ensure compliance with prescribed radiation doses and safety standards.
• Support and guide advanced treatment techniques (IMRT, IGRT, VMAT, SRS/SBRT).

Radiation Safety & Compliance
• Develops, implements, and monitors radiation safety programs to ensure a culture of safety and accountability.
• Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and accreditation standards (e.g., NRC, state regulations, and applicable accrediting bodies).
• Conducts radiation safety training and provides ongoing staff education.
• Investigates, documents, and resolves radiation incidents or variances, including root cause analysis and implements corrective actions as needed.

Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement
• Establishes and maintains quality control procedures for radiation therapy and imaging equipment.
• Participates in performance improvement initiatives to enhance clinical quality and patient safety.
• Maintains accurate records of equipment performance, calibration, and QA activities.
• Recommends and implements process improvements related to radiation safety and treatment delivery.

Collaboration & Support
• Works closely with Radiation Oncologists, Dosimetrists, and Radiation Therapists to ensure optimal patient care.
• Provides expertise and support for complex cases, treatment techniques,special procedures, and troubleshooting.
• Assists with clinical problem-solving and troubleshooting equipment or treatment-related issues.

PERFORMANCE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Medical Physics, Radiation Physics, or related field.
• 4 years of experience in Radiation Oncology Physics.
• Demonstrated experience with linear accelerators, treatment planning systems, and imaging modalities.
• Strong knowledge of radiation safety principles, dosimetry, and quality assurance practices.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in a community-based oncology setting.
• Proficiency with advanced treatment modalities (e.g., IMRT, IGRT, SRS/SBRT).
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a clinical environment.

CERTIFICATION / LICENSE:
• Board certification in Therapeutic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or eligibility required.
• State licensure, if applicable.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Work is performed in both clinical and office settings, including radiation treatment and imaging areas. Frequent interaction with clinical staff is required. The role involves attention to detail, problem-solving, and managing multiple priorities. May require standing, walking, and occasional lifting of equipment (up to 50 pounds). Adherence to radiation safety protocols is required at all times.
