Every fall, producers across Nebraska sit down with us and ask a version of the same question: how did we actually do this year, and what should we do about it? Answering that well takes more than a tax return. It takes accurate records, a real balance sheet, an accrual income statement, and someone who understands both the numbers and the operation behind them.

That is the work. And you will be learning to do it from your first week.

WHO WE ARE

Nebraska Farm Business, Inc. got its start in 1976 as part of University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension. We have been our own independent company for about 25 years - we still cooperate with the University on farm data and research, but we are a private firm and this is a private-sector job.

Today we work with roughly 600 producers across Nebraska. Some have worked with the same consultant for 27 years. Part of building those relationships is that we travel to them. Our consultants and assistants drive to Broken Bow, North Platte, Valentine, Norfolk, and Auburn to meet with clients - sometimes at the extension office, sometimes at the kitchen table.

By specializing in farm taxation and farm consulting, we help producers make informed decisions specific to their operation and their situation. We are known for doing farm taxes right - thoroughly, and with an honest conversation when the law is grey.

WHAT YOU WOULD DO

• Work shoulder to shoulder with our Farm Financial Consultants on real client operations - tax returns, financial analyses, cash flows, depreciation schedules.
• Build and review client accounting records, and learn to spot what is missing before it becomes a problem.
• Ride along to client meetings across Nebraska and see how a good consultant explains a hard number to a family.
• Take on more of the work independently as your judgment grows - and it will grow faster here than almost anywhere else.
• Represent NFBI at trade shows and producer meetings in the ag community.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

A degree in ag economics, agribusiness, accounting, finance, or business - or real experience in tax preparation, agricultural lending, or farm and ranch bookkeeping. If you have been reading farm financials at a bank or keeping books at a co-op, we want to hear from you.

Beyond that: attention to detail, comfort with Excel, a valid driver's license, and the ability to keep a confidence absolutely.

And one more thing that matters more than any of it. Our clients want to work with people who understand what they do every day. You do not need to have farmed. But knowing a cow from a bull, what a combine does, and that a chopper is not a helicopter will serve you well here.

THE HONEST PART

November through April is our busy stretch. Once harvest wraps and tax planning starts, we see clients nearly every day and travel picks up. Expect more activity, more stress, less downtime, and regular overtime - paid at time and a half.

Summers are a different animal. Calmer, more flexible, more predictable. Plenty of variety in the work, but the pressure comes off. We would rather tell you that now than surprise you in November.

Travel runs roughly 10 to 20 overnight nights a year, mostly November, January, and March, plus our national conference each June.

PAY AND BENEFITS

• $27.00 - $28.50 per hour to start, depending on experience - about $56,000 to $59,000 a year at straight time, before overtime.
• Overtime at time and a half, with regular overtime November through April.
