Neal’s Deli is a locally-owned small business serving Carrboro and Chapel Hill since 2008. We strive to know our regulars and be welcoming to newcomers, support our local farmers, businesses, and neighbors, and maintain excellent standards when it comes to food quality and creativity. Our food is made using time-intensive techniques, care, and attention, and our work is ethically motivated. We have been noted often in local publications throughout the Triangle and NC, and have received national attention from such organizations as the New York Times and the Southern Foodways Alliance.

Our team is currently seeking an experienced, highly-competent, and professional full-time prep cook! This is a daytime position requiring 6- to 9-hour shifts, starting between 6:30 AM and 9:30 AM, and ending between 3 PM and 5 PM, Tuesdays through Saturdays required. Weekly hours average around 35-40 per week.

$15/hour starting pay, with review at the end of the first 90 days

Share of pooled tips pooled between all eligible staff members, based on proportion of hours worked during a given pay period, average estimated between $6-8/hour.

• Preparing dishes from the regular menu as directed by a daily prep list and incidental needs communicated during the shift.
• Maintain a clean and organized work station, including storage areas and equipment used by other team members.
• Use observation and awareness and work with management to set daily priorities, solve problems, improve methods, and assist others to achieve team goals.
• Follow food safety best practices and standard operating procedures such as time-and-temperature controls, labeling/dating/organizing product, and cleaning procedures.
• Receive/check-in and store shipments and deliveries in a timely manner with assistance from other staff members.
• Weekly sidework including any cleaning that may be necessary for the maintenance of equipment and work/storage areas.
• Assist other staff members with duties that are not within the primary functions of the Prep Cook position in order to promote equitable workloads, as such needs arise.

The Prep Cook must:

• Have knowledge and enthusiasm for preparing high quality food by hand.
• Be able to use written recipes, use measurement conversions, multiply batch sizes, and know common kitchen measurements (mostly Imperial, some Metric).
• Be able to use, clean, and maintain a variety of commercial kitchen equipment, including knives, meat slicers, smoker ovens, combi ovens, stoves, blenders, food processors, spice grinders.
• Have good-to-excellent knife skills, cut meat and vegetables to the proper size and mix ingredients using the proper techniques and utensils.
• Be able to withstand fluctuations in temperature and a humid environment.
• Be able to lift up to 40 lbs or team lift up to 80 lbs, bend, crouch, reach overhead, climb ladders, stand for the majority of the shift.
• Adhere to all dress code requirements, as set by management according to NC Food Code mandates.
• Adhere to time and attendance policies.
• Be able to communicate with managers and other team members in a professional, attentive, and courteous manner.

Current ServSafe certification or willingness to become ServSafe certified within 3 months of hire, with additional compensation upon successful completion.
