Position Summary
The Music Director is responsible for designing, coordinating, and implementing a high-quality music program in collaboration with other music staff, church staff, and volunteers in order to provide a beautiful, meaningful worship experience.
Position Requirements
Personal
- Have a Christian background.
- Strong vocalist preferred
- Maintain a cooperative attitude toward the pastoral staff, Worship Committee and the
congregation.
- Possess a background in the following areas: training in music involving theory,
harmony, sight reading and singing, conducting, and vocal techniques.
- Sufficient training on the piano including theory, harmony and the ability to read open
score.
- Possess an ability to lead, conduct and teach music, possess knowledge of hymns and
other church music, and the ability to perform each one appropriately.
- Understand the purpose of congregational singing and instrumental accompaniment.
- Comply with the Safe Sanctuaries policy at Neal Avenue United Methodist Church.
- Be both dependable and punctual in carrying out duties.
- Be organized as well as possess the ability to be flexible if changes occur.
Responsibilities
- Plan and Develop a high-quality music program in collaboration with the other music
staff, church staff, and volunteers to build a foundation of music to engage individuals of
every age in different musical styles, genres, and instruments.
- Coordinate with all church music groups as needed or applicable, including Chancel
Choir, Children’s Choir, Hand Bell Choir, Praise Team and other music groups to facilitate
the overall music ministry of the congregation, and rehearse as needed.
- Coordinate with office staff to help in preparation for weekly bulletins and other publications involving music.
- Select, purchase and conduct music which reflects high quality for worship services.
- Be aware of copyright laws and music licensing as well as executing any reporting
requirements as needed.
- Assist in leading weekly worship services - accompanying, conducting, cantorial duties,
etc.
- Vigilantly recruit members and soloists for the choir programs as well as performers and
soloists for summer and special music as needed. Recruiting should be both within the
congregation as well as the greater community.
- Direct, instruct and lead music personnel in appropriate music for worship services.
- Be available to perform for all church functions, i.e., wedding and funerals, as needed.
- Maintain an appropriate library of choir music and be responsible for its care and
Storage.
- Assist in providing an acceptable substitute when absent.
- Attend staff meetings and/or worship planning meetings.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT
The Music Director shall be offered an employment contract that will be thoroughly discussed and mutually agreed upon by the Senior Pastor and the SPRC Committee (or appointed representative) at the time of employment. The contract shall be reviewed at the request of the Senior Pastor or the SPRC Committee. The Music Director will be responsible to the Senior Pastor and the SPRC Committee. The Music Director will not have direct reports and will be expected to work in collaboration with other music staff.
