Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Julius L. Chambers Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute (BBRI) is a 40,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art research facility that is dedicated to expanding the University’s research capacity, particularly in the biomedical and biotechnology areas. The BBRI is a broad-based multi-disciplinary research and training institute. The mission of the BBRI is to conduct multidisciplinary and inter-institutional research focused on health issues that disproportionately affect minority and underserved groups while providing students with research experiences that will enhance their access to careers in the biomedical sciences.

Primary Purpose of Position

NCCU invites applications for a Research Scientist to help build and expand RCMI supported core resources and programming in developmental and environmental toxicology. The effort will build translational science capacity and is also aligned with recent strategic efforts to build capacity in environmental sciences such as NCCU-RTI CARES, NCCU–NC State partnership in environmental health and Duke-NCCU Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA).

Aligned with NIH priorities, this scientist will apply New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and model-organism systems including zebrafish and killifish embryos to study the molecular and developmental effects of environmental contaminants such as PFAS and other industrial and environmental toxins. The position will contribute to NCCU’s expanding research capacity in translational science with a focus on environmental science. Under broader NCCU RCMI umbrella, the effort is also aligned with programs like NCCU-RTI Center for Applied Research in Environmental Sciences, NC State’s Center for Human Health and the Environment (CHHE) and Duke-NCCU CTSA partnership supporting studies in translational science including health outreach, education and workforce development.

Required

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience working with PFAS using advance methods such as single cell biology and next generation sequencing
  • Demonstrated expertise in developmental biology and model-organism research.
  • Proficiency in molecular, genomic, and imaging techniques.
  • Strong record of scholarly productivity and teamwork.

Preferred

  • Experience with zebrafish/killifish embryology, NAMs and exposure biology.
  • Interest in community-based and translational environmental health and education.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Ph.D. in Developmental Biology, Toxicology, Environmental Science, or related field.

Primary Responsibilities And Duties

Function Research Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

  • Lead laboratory studies using zebrafish embryos and killifish to investigate developmental and lifespan toxicity of environmental exposures.
  • Apply advanced genomic and imaging methods (RNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq, single-cell omics, confocal microscopy) to uncover molecular mechanisms of exposure.
  • Develop and implement NAM-based platforms such as organoids, microphysiological systems, and computational models.

Function Pursuit of Grant and Other Funding Opportunities Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

  • Participate in proposal writing, publications, presentation and other dissemination methods.

Function Collaboration and Campus Engagement Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

  • Collaborate across BBRI, BRITE, NCCU–RTI CARES, as well as Duke University and NC State CHHE to advance translational environmental-health science.
  • Mentor trainees and contribute to community and K-12 outreach in rural North Carolina.
