Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Central University School of Law was founded to provide opportunities for African Americans to become lawyers. Primary Purpose of Position

The Director of Legal Writing provides academic and administrative leadership for the School of Law’s legal writing program. The Director assist with the development, coordination, and assessment of the legal writing curriculum and supports faculty in delivering a rigorous and consistent program. The position advances the School of Law’s commitment to student success, bar readiness, and practice preparation by strengthening students’ legal analysis, research, writing, and professional communication skills.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

This is posting for a Legal Writing Director in the School of Law beginning in FY 27-28. The Legal Writing Director will teach various courses within the legal writing curriculum and any other courses in the Law program as assigned. The Legal Writing Director will be paid an annual salary. The Legal Writing Director will be responsible for holding office hours that correspond to the course hours taught.

  • Expertise in subject matter hired to teach
  • Ability to design and teach courses at the J.D. level
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Basic computer skills, proficient in the use of Microsoft Office or similar software
  • Experience with software related to legal education (e.g. Lexis, Westlaw)

Minimum Education/Experience

J.D. from an ABA accredited law school

Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

License to practice law that is good standing

Function Instructional Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

The Legal Writing Director will develop and design curriculum plans to foster learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensure student engagement. The Legal Writing Director will provide tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintain class related records, and assess student coursework. Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.

Function Research Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

The Legal Writing Director will conduct research in a particular field of knowledge, and publish findings in professional journals, books, and/or electronic media. Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues. Keep abreast of developments in their field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participate in professional conferences.

Function Public Service Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Serve on various Law School and University committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues. Participate in campus and community events.
