About Jackson And Belhaven
Founded in 1821 as the site for a new state capital, Jackson is the capital of and the most populous city in the state of Mississippi. The city itself has a population of approximately 150,000. Jackson is the anchor for the Jackson metropolitan statistical area, the largest metropolitan area completely within the state and the 10th largest urban area in the Deep South. With a 2020 population estimated at around 600,000, metropolitan Jackson is home to over one-fifth of Mississippi's population. The city sits on the Pearl River among three adjoining counties offering the region’s best and most numerous offerings in schools, communities, health care, and recreational activities. Today, the largest metro area in Mississippi is leading the charge for the state's arts, culinary and cultural progression. Compared with other similarly sized metro areas, Jackson is very affordable. The median home sale price is significantly lower than the national median, and Jackson residents pay less for groceries, utilities, and transportation than those living in other large urban areas.
Located in Jackson, Belhaven is a special place whose name translates into “beautiful home”. Belhaven was founded in 1883 and is a Christian university committed to Biblical Truth and Godly Grace. Belhaven wants its students to understand the world as God designed it and experience the fullness of a life modeled upon Jesus. At Belhaven, students build a foundation for success. They are challenged to think deeply while discovering and answering their call. They are pushed to succeed academically and professionally by a caring campus community. And, most importantly, they are empowered to make a difference in a world that needs their gifts. With over 5,100 students across 40 states and 20 countries, plus 80 areas of study, a student/faculty ratio of only 13:1 and 40 online programs that are flexible for working adults, Belhaven offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students, including the Belhaven “Double Major Promise” and a “Free Online Master’s Degree”. Belhaven is a grand idea: A community where students can grow and thrive. It’s an outlook and education that prepares you to be all that God has created them to be.
