Position Overview

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible appointment that includes serving as Head Coach for Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Assistant Coach for Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field, and Instructor in the required Physical Education program.

The coaching responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: leading and administering all aspects of the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country programs; coaching and supervising student-athletes in cross country and distance events; assisting with the Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field programs; recruiting prospective student-athletes; counseling, mentoring, and supporting student-athletes; coordinating team training, competition preparation, and meet-day responsibilities; and ensuring compliance with MIT, conference, and NCAA Division III rules and regulations.

In addition, this position will coordinate and reconcile team travel and logistics; oversee team development activities such as leadership training and conflict resolution; support mentorship programs for team members and alumni; and assist with department-wide initiatives as assigned. This position is expected to remain current in professional development for both coaching and physical education instruction. Teaching responsibilities include instruction in the required Physical Education and Wellness course program.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**):

  • Serve as Head Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country programs, providing leadership, supervision, instruction, and administration for all aspects of the programs.
  • Develop, organize, and implement training plans, practice sessions, competitive strategies, and race preparation for cross country student-athletes.
  • Assist with the Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field programs, with primary support for distance events and other areas as assigned by the Director of Track and Field/Head Coach.
  • Assist with a high-quality varsity program that is competitively challenging, well organized and administered, based on sound coaching techniques and instructional strategies, and has a positive retention rate.
  • Recruit academically qualified student-athletes to a highly selective science and engineering-oriented institution and maintain appropriate roster numbers for the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country programs and related track and field event groups.
  • Coordinate recruiting efforts for Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and assist with recruiting for Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field.
  • Counsel, mentor, and support student-athletes in their academic, athletic, and personal development.
  • Teach Physical Education and Wellness courses in the required program. Duties include instruction, attendance at meetings specific to physical education, assisting with curriculum development, and adherence to all physical education policies and procedures.
  • Assist in awarding physical education points toward graduation requirements through the Physical Education office for student participation in varsity athletics.
  • Coordinate team travel, logistics, lodging, meals, transportation, itineraries, and related expense reconciliation for cross country and track and field, as assigned.
  • Ensure adherence to DAPER risk management procedures and proper safety precautions regarding student instruction, student-athlete training, competition, and health.
  • Communicate effectively and in a timely manner with Sports Medicine staff to support the health and safety of student-athletes.
  • Plan and oversee home meet responsibilities related to cross country and assist with track and field home meet setup and operations as assigned.
  • Oversee team development activities, including leadership training, team culture initiatives, conflict resolution, and mentorship programs involving student-athletes and alumni.
  • Participate in collaborative activities across the Division of Student Life and within DAPER through service on committees and mentoring colleagues.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Track and Field/Head Coach and other event-group coaches to support the overall success of the cross country and track and field programs.
  • Administer or assist with team social media efforts in accordance with NCAA rules and MIT/DAPER policies.
  • Upon request, provide team statistics, results, highlights, and other relevant materials to the Director of DAPER Communications, Promotions and Marketing or designee.
  • Ensure adherence to regulations and completion of forms associated with MIT, conference, and national governance regulations at the NCAA Division III membership level.
  • Maintain membership in good standing in the sport’s national coaches association or governing body.
  • Competently fulfill other administrative duties as assigned.

Requirements

3–5 years of coaching experience required, preferably at the college/university level. Experience coaching cross country and/or distance events is strongly preferred. A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in a field related to physical education, exercise science, kinesiology, or a related area, or equivalent proven instructional experience. Master’s degree preferred.

Proven experience recruiting academically qualified student-athletes to a highly selective institution is desirable. Strong administrative, organizational, interpersonal, communication, and computer skills are essential. Knowledge of NCAA Division III rules and regulations is required.

Appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, and Biohazards are required within 30 days of hire. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a background check.
