Hopkins Athletics is multidivisional department with 22 programs competing at the NCAA DIII level and two programs (men’s and women’s lacrosse) competing at the NCAA Division I level (BIG 10 Conference). The department also hosts a variety of robust recreational activities such as club sports, intramurals, and fitness programming.
Johns Hopkins is hiring an assistant track and field coach to lead its sprints/hurdles program. This is a 12-month salaried position with benefits. This position will be responsible for coaching the sprints and hurdles program and assisting with all training and practices within University, Conference and NCAA rules and regulations. The ideal candidate will possess a high level of competency in track and field skill instruction, motivation and conducting practice sessions under the direction of the Head Coach. They will understand the role of intercollegiate athletics in a highly competitive academic environment; possess strong communication skills and can effectively manage administrative duties for the team. The ideal candidate will effectively build and sustain positive relationships with faculty, staff and alumni and student-athletes. They will mentor student-athletes with maturity and integrity and be a positive role model. They should possess strong leadership skills and understand the concepts, applications and philosophies of the collegiate track and field. Duties will include, but are not limited to: practice planning, recruiting, scouting, and other duties as assigned by the head coach. Johns Hopkins is a member of the Centennial Conference, and NCAA Division III affiliate.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
The Assistant Coach is directly supervised by the Head Coach. This position has significant interactions with faculty and staff, students, alumni, and other outside constituencies.
The position will be a full-time, fiscal year appointment, with frequent evening and weekend work required throughout the year with those dates determined by a supervisor. Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Serve as the program’s primary coach for all sprints/hurdles athletes
- Oversee compliance of track and field athletes independent of cross-country program.
- Assist in implementation of track and field scheduling, itineraries, and expense reports.
- Oversee recruiting efforts of all sprints/jumps/hurdles athletes.
- Understand the role of intercollegiate athletics in a highly competitive academic environment and assist student-athletes in achieving exceptionally high athletic and academic goals
- Exhibit strong communication and leadership skills and build and sustain positive relationships with student-athletes, faculty, and staff
- Maintain and ensure compliance with the University’s policies, the Centennial Conference policies and the NCAA rules and regulations
- Handle other responsibilities as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Prior experience coaching and recruiting sprinters/hurdlers at a high academic institution preferred
- Must have the ability to work nights, weekends, and holiday work
- Travel is also required. A valid drivers’ license and ability to drive a vehicle is required.
