This posting is for an Engineering Technician III in the District 2 Unit. This Engineering Technician III position performs advanced-level technical work supporting engineers in the administration and execution of Division 7 District programs. The role requires working independently while serving as a lead technician for complex highway and structure projects, including driveway permits, site plans, utility and non-utility encroachment agreements, subdivision plan reviews, and road additions/abandonments. The position is responsible for reviewing permit submittals, construction plans, traffic studies, and subdivision plans for compliance with NCDOT standards. The employee conducts independent field inspections on various construction operations using plans, contracts, and specifications. Duties include performing construction and materials inspections, preparing deficiency letters, conducting pre-construction meetings, and performing complex technical and mathematical calculations. The position communicates technical requirements and project expectations to developers, contractors, engineers, inspectors, property owners, utility representatives, and the general public, responding to questions and addressing complaints through telephone, written correspondence, or in-person meetings. Responsibilities also include maintaining detailed project documentation such as daily diaries, survey notes, inspection reports, and other electronic or manual records. The employee supervises and directs lower-level technicians and works collaboratively within team environments. Work requires knowledge of construction plan interpretation, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, surveying equipment, drafting tools, and computer applications such as Microsoft Office and drafting software (e.g., MicroStation). Additional duties include supporting the Division during emergencies and inclement weather, ensuring adherence to NCDOT specifications, and assisting the District Engineer with assigned tasks. The employee must acquire and maintain certifications such as QMS Asphalt, Concrete Testing, Borrow Pit Sampling, Level II Erosion Control, and any other required credentials. The position also requires the ability to lift 40–50 pounds, work in high-traffic areas, heights, uneven terrain, and in varying weather conditions, including nights and weekends when necessary. Safety shoes required. Selected candidate will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC11 $45,431 - $79,504 Management prefers applicants with the following: Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision. Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex or technical problems. Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups. Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments. Computer experience including office software and drafting software. Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
