Description Of Work
This is supervisory work or highly skilled work in the general maintenance, repair and/or construction of buildings, related equipment, and plumbing, heating/cooling, and/or electrical systems. Work is performed in accordance with maintenance schedules across assigned facilities. Special repair assignments are received by work orders from authorized personnel. Work requires the exercise of initiative and judgment in the application of various technical trade skills to a variety of maintenance, repair and/or construction problems and in determining the extent of repair or replacement work to be done. Work usually involves supervision of employees engaged in journeyman level work involving electrical, plumbing, masonry, heating and air, carpentry, cabinet making, roofing, painting, or other trades. However, employees may perform a wide variety of highly technical tasks independently at and above the journeyman level.

This position is located at Nash Correctional Institution and is assigned to the maintenance section of a correctional facility. The primary purpose of this position is to perform preventive, routine, and corrective maintenance tasks and repairs, ensuring that assigned systems, equipment, and facilities within a medium custody facility to include management of a minimum custody facility which is managed within the scope of the larger institution are maintained in a safe and efficient manner. The salary grade for this position is NC11(Salary Range $ 43,738 - $76,542). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.
About Nash Correctional Institution
Nash Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility located in Nashville, Nash County NC. It houses approximately 654 male offenders. The facility provides offender labor to two Correction Enterprises operations located on site: the Optical Plant and the Print Plant. The Optical Plant manufactures eyeglasses for customers such as Medicaid and the Division of Services for the Blind. The Print Plant is a full-service print shop dedicated to printing services for state government agencies, public school systems, state community colleges and universities, and non-profit organizations.
Management Preferences
Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. - Functions at the journeyman level in multiple skilled trades such as electrical, plumbing, mechanical, heating and air, or similar specializations.
- Supervises the ongoing preventive maintenance and continuous repair of doors and locks, windows and screens, floor and wall tiles, interior and exterior building repairs and may perform electrical repairs to lighting, building wiring, conduit, security fencing and equipment.
- Performs work independently; however, positions may refer unusual work problems to their supervisor for consideration and final determination.
- Supervises the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled labor to include offender tabor to assist in completing assigned tasks.
- Work is evaluated on the basis of compliance with work orders and success in keeping equipment in proper working condition.
- Performs other duties as required. Individuals may be required to work some weekends and holidays.
