Position Overview
A government agency is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Mainframe Systems Programmer specializing in IBM DB2 on z/OS. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, supporting, and optimizing mission-critical mainframe database environments. This role requires an individual who can operate independently, provide technical leadership, and ensure the stability, performance, and serviceability of DB2 subsystems and associated products.
The consultant will support the installation, configuration, and maintenance of z/OS environments and DB2 systems, offering expert-level problem-solving and performance tuning capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Support and maintain DB2 subsystems within a z/OS environment.
Perform DB2 software installations, upgrades, and maintenance using SMP/E.
Diagnose and resolve complex DB2 and related product issues.
Tune DB2 for performance optimization and resource utilization.
Provide technical documentation and enforce DB2 best practices.
Conduct ongoing maintenance of mainframe z/OS and related software, including:
Database systems
Transaction servers
Security management tools
Scheduling systems
Report distribution services
UNIX System Services
Provide production off-hours support and weekend implementation coverage as needed.
Mandatory Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or 10 years of technical experience.
Experience: Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience with:
z/OS, JES2, SMP/E, TSO, IOCP/HCD
IBM utilities (e.g., IDCAMS, IEFBR14)
Program product installations and IBM virtual tape systems
UNIX System Services
Proven experience with DB2 database system recovery and general DB2 administration.
Experience with VTAM and TCP/IP networking on mainframe systems.
Proficiency with monitoring tools such as OMEGAMON.
Experience supporting enterprise-wide, large-scale environments.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Experience performing mainframe CPU installs as a systems programmer consultant.
Desired Skills
Working knowledge of CICS, IMS, and AFP printing.
