Criminal Paralegal
Nave Law Firm | Syracuse, NY | Full-time | $22 to $26 per hour
About Nave Law Firm
We opened in Syracuse in 2018 and have grown to offices in Syracuse and Albany, with more than 30 team members serving clients across upstate New York. We handle DWI defense through our DWI TEAM brand, along with criminal defense, traffic, and other practice areas. We’re built on accountability, results, and treating clients like people instead of case numbers.
The role
Our criminal defense attorneys need a paralegal who can keep them organized, prepared, and ahead of deadlines on a caseload of 150 active files. You’ll also be a go-to contact for our clients, many of whom are going through one of the most stressful experiences of their lives. Keeping them informed and making sure they understand what’s happening in their case is a big part of the job.
If you like a fast pace, take pride in getting the details right, and want to work somewhere that holds people to a high standard and supports them in meeting it, this is a good fit.
What you’ll do
- Manage attorney calendars, including initial appearances, court dates, filing deadlines, meetings, and file reminders
- Draft correspondence, pleadings, and legal documents, including omnibus motions and subpoenas
- Review discovery and save it to Clio
- Keep clients updated on court dates, adjournments, and case status, and help them use Clio for Clients
- Work with District Attorney’s offices on discovery, mitigation packets, and plea offers
- Coordinate with courts on case files, court dates, and adjournment requests
- Contact expert witnesses to request opinions and schedule testimony
- Assist with trial prep and legal research
- Maintain electronic and physical files according to our file management system
What we’re looking for
- Paralegal or legal assistant experience in a law firm; criminal defense experience is a plus
- Bachelor’s degree or paralegal certificate preferred
- Working knowledge of legal procedures, terminology, and document preparation
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage high volume without letting things slip
- Clear, professional communication with clients, courts, and prosecutors
- Discretion with confidential information
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Clio experience preferred but not required
Our culture
We take culture seriously because it’s what makes the work sustainable. Our team brings positive energy, holds each other accountable, and treats everyone with respect, from clients to coworkers to the people across the table. We’d rather see results than hear promises, so we live by WD > WS: well done beats well said.
We also invest in our people. You’ll get real training, room to grow, and leadership that’s open to new ideas. Our weekly Locker Room Sessions keep the team connected and give everyone a voice in how we work.
