Job Description

The MTS Engineering Manager is responsible for providing engineering and liaison services in support of operation, maintenance, and testing of the MTSs. The position requires close working relationships with various NNL, BPMI, and Moored Training Ship Support Yard (MTSSY) design groups. The position also requires close working relationships with the Navy's MTS Commanding Officers, MTS Engineer Officers, and the NPTU-C Chain of Command.

The position involves supporting the MTSs in:

  • Providing technical advice on operational, maintenance, and testing issues to the MTS Commanding Officers and their staff
  • Providing leadership for reviewing, commenting, and issuing of Trouble Records, Liaison Action Requests, and Manual Change Requests
  • Championing resolution of select problems outside the expertise of an MTS's capability
  • Coordinating Engineering Tests
  • Providing plant maintenance planning support
  • Providing Quality Assurance support for NPTU
  • Participating as a senior member of the NPTU Emergency Response Organization

Manage personnel typically performing work in the following functional areas: engineering, science, data analytics, and/or technical compliance. Responsible for nuclear safety/criticality control (includes handling spent fuel, fuel lab work, irradiated specimens). Oversees work with significant radiological insult (includes radiological operations and D&D of radiological facilities). Responsible for laboratory and/or facility ownership, which includes safe operation of high energy systems and/or significant environmental impact (e.g., chemical, radiological). Responsible for design or life cycle support of nuclear assets. Responsible for packaging of waste with significant radiological/environmental insult.

Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and previous management experience; or Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience and previous management experience.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to establish and maintain open and effective relationships with a diverse set of interfacing organizations and levels of personnel
  • Previous experience in Fleet Support, RPCO, or previously qualified EOOW on any Naval nuclear propulsion plant.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Navy Personnel
  • Ability to qualify as a Radiation Worker

Pay Range

$157,700.00 - $251,400.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.

FMP is a government contractor and maintains a drug free workplace and workforce. All candidates must be able to pass a drug test in compliance with FMP company policy and 10 CFR 707.
