Job Description

The Radiological Controls Operations unit at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania is seeking to hire a Radiological Controls Technician (RCT). The RCT position offers hands-on experience in an industrial work environment including the performance of radiological surveys in support of Site operations, overview of radiological work evolutions, and response to unexpected conditions. The RCT must uphold the radiological standards during the performance of work, use resources efficiently, and work independently with effective decision-making abilities.

The successful candidate will be required to complete a substantial and demanding qualification program to develop a high level of knowledge prior to functioning as a technician. The qualification includes Site-specific orientation and training, as well as the satisfactory completion of a 22-week course at the Radiological Controls Technician Qualification School (RCTQS) in Norfolk, Virginia. Initial qualification and future periodic re-qualification involves demonstration of practical abilities, written and oral examinations, and drills. Previous experience that the successful candidate possesses will be evaluated regarding the qualification requirements for this position. Candidate must be capable of passing a mathematical examination prior to attendance at the RCTQS that demonstrates the ability to solve algebraic equations, including the use of logarithmic functions and scientific notation. Qualified technicians will support and participate in a continuing training program to maintain and improve their level of knowledge.

The candidate must be able to perform activities requiring bending, stooping/squatting, kneeling/crouching, and climbing ladders, must be able to understand complex verbal and written instructions and perform assignments requiring manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination, and must be able to successfully pass a periodic physical exam and drug screening test.

Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill

High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or

High school diploma or equivalent and qualification as a Naval Nuclear Propulsion Operator (or commercial nuclear equivalent) and a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience; or

High school diploma and RCTQS qualified; or

Associates degree from an accredited college or university; or

Journeymans Papers in a related field.

Preferred Skills

Previous experience as a Contamination Worker.

Previous completion of Radiological Controls Technician Qualification School (RCTQS) and/or past qualification as an RCT within the NNPP Program.

Experience in Microsoft Office Computer programs.

Pay Range

$57,500.00 - $88,000.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.

FMP is a government contractor and maintains a drug free workplace and workforce. All candidates must be able to pass a drug test in compliance with FMP company policy and 10 CFR 707.
