PURPOSE OF POSITION

 

To provide students with a strong academic program that will prepare them for college-level study; to create a learning environment that will allow students to grow and learn; to set high expectations for success; and to help students develop a positive self-esteem that they will carry the rest of their lives.

 

This position will be for the upcoming SY 2026-2027.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

 

Required Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in teaching preferred; Bachelor's degree acceptable with 5 years progressive experience in teaching at the secondary level.
  • Valid New Mexico teaching licensure with proper endorsement in assigned teaching area(s).
  • Level II Licensure Required, Level III Licensure Preferred.

Required Experience

Minimum of three years of successful experience as classroom teacher in a secondary school.

  • Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate lessons which stimulate and motivate students to learn.
  • Positive Attitude.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for all learners.
  • Effective communication skills with students, parents and the general public.

  • Computer literate with various educational software applications.
  • Knowledge of curriculum, lesson plans and assessments.
  • Knowledge and understanding of educational research and best practices in a college preparatory school setting.
  • Basic knowledge, understanding, and respect for the Navajo language, history, and culture.

Desired Knowledge

  • Application of technology in a classroom setting (e.g. whiteboards or promethean boards.)
  • Experience working in an IB Diploma School; An understanding and commitment to the principles of the IB Diploma Programme; a commitment to the NPS School Mission.
  • Appreciation of the ethos of student's boarding and day school.

New employees in this position must provide documentation of immunity or immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and measles/rubella within thirty (30) days of hiring, and at such additional intervals as may be determined by the immediate supervisor.

 

 

Navajo/Indian preference:

Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimum requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.

Primary: Associate Head of School for Academics and Operations

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Communicate on a regular basis with the academic team with regard to planning, assessment, subject organization, and classroom issues, such as discipline and expectations.
  2. Develop good instructional planning and preparation for learning outcomes that are aligned with the school philosophy, IB philosophy and pedagogical approaches that are relevant to 21st century teaching and learning.
  3. Models and promotes the IB Leaner Profile and international-mindedness in the classroom and across campus.
  4. Aligns instructional practices and assessments to the rigor of IB Aims and Objectives.
  5. Participate in professional learning communities to analyze data, as well as collaborate on creating curriculum, instruction and assessment.
  6. Establish a culture of learning and maintain a classroom environment that has high expectations, promotes positive student interactions and is respectful and culturally sensitive.
  7. Implements 21st century technology in the classroom to enhance teaching and learning.
  8. Communicate with other school colleagues in an effort to promote student achievement across and within various disciplines and departments.
  9. Take an active role in student behavioral management by communicating with parents, coaches, residential staff, academic counselor and others.
  10. Attend and constructively contribute to department and faculty meetings.
  11. Coordinate class activities as deemed necessary.
  12. Maintain up-to-date records in NASIS (attendance and semester grades) and Toddle (assignments, grades, and unit plans).
  13. Communicate academic achievement and progress to parents, guardians and students on a regular basis.
  14. Act as a resource and support person for new staff members (i.e. curriculum, schedules, NASIS, Toddle)
  15. Support and implement Cognia school improvement activities and "Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)" Legislation.
  16. Be knowledgeable of the Individual with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA), attend IEP meetings and support student individualized education plans (IEP) and meetings.
  17. Prepare for and attend all parent/teacher conferences.
  18. Maintain professional dress and use of appropriate language for educational setting.
  19. Participate in departmental committees throughout the year and contributes to school community events and activities.
  20. Participate in the Advisory program and guide students through CAS, Extended Essay and Atsá requirements.
  21. Maintain professional competence through in-service education and professional development activities provided by the School.
  22. Attend required in-service training, other required meetings and student activity functions.
  23. Attend Academic Awards Banquet and Baccalaureate and Graduation ceremonies.
  24. Assist with school policy reviews.
  25. Assist with new student interviews with at least three candidates per year.
  26. Comply with the school policies and procedures and model the school code of conduct.
  27. Be a reflective practitioner and contribute to the NPS learning community.
  28. Represent NPS in a manner reflecting professionalism and which enhances community understanding of the program.
  29. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may from time-to-time be assigned by the Dean of Academics, Associate Head of School for Academics and Operations, or the Head of School.

 

EVALUATION

 

Will be evaluated in accordance with the Navajo Preparatory School Board policies and procedures.
