School Nurse

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Oversees and coordinates the Dr. Taylor McKenzie School Based Health Center to provide professional integrated primary medical and behavioral health care services to all students. The Nurse/Coordinator implements a school health program in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Health, Northern Navajo Medical Center/Teen Life Center and other service providers. The mission of the School Based Health Center is to promote prevention of disease and enhance health and wellness in the school community.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

• Valid New Mexico Registered Nurse license.
• Bachelor's degree in appropriate discipline required, Master's Degree preferred.
• Three or more years professional nursing experience, preferably pediatric, adolescent, community or school nursing.
• Current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification; CPR/First Aid Instructor certification to train NPS staff.
• Mastery of oral and written communication skills; good human relation skills.
• Ability to make difficult decisions while under stress with composure, tact, and dignity.
• Ability to identify and organize needed health programs on campus.
• Strong computer skills, especially with MS Office and internet-based applications.
• Work experience in a secondary school environment with a predominately Native American Indian student population preferred.
• Basic understanding of Navajo culture and values. Ability to speak Navajo preferred but not required.
• Knowledge of applicable regulations and guidelines for operations of a School Based Health Center under the New Mexico Department of Health.

Preferential consideration for employment will be given to persons of documented Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan tribal membership, who meet the minimum qualifications for employment in this position as set forth below, in accordance with the requirements of P.L. 93-638 and the Navajo Tribal Code.

220- day Contract

Note: Notwithstanding the above, this position is subject to possible furlough, or reduction in force under NPS, Inc. Personnel Policies, due to unforeseen reductions in program funding that requires such general program changes.

SUPERVISOR

Primary: Division Director of Student Life and Wellness

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides direct professional nursing services including first aid, illness, and emergency care to students, including: vision and hearing screening, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentation.
2. Responsible for the daily operations of the School Based Health Center (SBHC).
3. Works closely with New Mexico Department of Health office of School and Adolescent Health to implement SBHC contract obligations and assure compliance with performance standards and benchmarks.
4. Conducts regular review and update of SBHC policies, including medication storage and administration, communicable disease prevention and control, child abuse reporting, etc, to ensure protocols and policies are in compliance with Dept. of Health regulations.
5. Maintains accurate student medical records to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions.
6. Secures and protects the confidentiality of students and their SBHC/School Nurse records in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA laws.
7. Participates as member of the Crisis Incident Response Team and the School Wellness Committee, Student Stupport Team (SST), Leadership Team and Campus Development.
8. Provides or coordinates staff inservices and classroom instruction on health topics such as blood borne pathogens, MRSA, Healthy Relationships with Adolescents afterschool program,
9. Makes appropriate reports and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
10. Monitors injury reporting in Magnus.
11. Attends required meetings and specialized trainings required by the New Mexico Department of Health.
12. Maintain adequate medical and office supplies in the SBHC.
13. Maintain cleanliness and sterility required for medical procedures, including appropriate bio-hazard waste containers and disposal procedures.
14. Supervises and evaluates the SBHC Health Assistant.
15. Supervise SBHC Health Assistant, SJC interns and update MOU as needed.
16. Provide staff training and back-to-school trainings as needed.
17. At times, may be requested to assist with athletic events if short-staffed.
18. Re-enrollment required immunizations for returning and incoming students.
19. Manage and oversee SBHC budget.
20. Provide monthly board reports, office visits, and necessary data upon request.
21. Support and comply with grant, program, and/or funding source requirements.
22. On Call for Transport of students to ER or Urgent Care coordinated with Student Life Residential Coordinator.
23. Comply with all NPS Board of Education polices, administrative guidelines, Public Education Department guidelines, local, state and federal laws.
24. Adhere to NM Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession (NMAC 6.60.9.8).

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated annually by the Division Director of Student Life and Wellness.

Background check required as a condition of employment.

Salary : $55,000 - $65,000
