What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Support Specialist- Research position at Navajo Preparatory School Inc?
PURPOSE OF POSITION
To assist the Director of Library Services in the operation and maintenance of the Navajo Preparatory School, Inc. library, and to assist students and staff with accessing library resources.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Equivalent to a high school diploma or GED plus one (1) year of administrative support experience in an academic, public, or specialty library. An AA degree in library science, education or business is preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied.
- At a minimum, all applicants must be twenty-one (21) years of age to perform instructional services in grades 9-12.
- Possession of or ability to obtain an Educational Assistant and Substitute license from the New Mexico Public Education Department.
- A valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
- Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System of classification, machine readable cataloging (MARC) tagging, library cataloging conventions, and Library of Congress Subject Headings.
- Knowledge of current library/office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of safe cash handling techniques.
- Ability to work well with adolescents.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate various office equipment and software.
- Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making difficult decisions while under stress with composure, tact, and dignity.
- Attentive to details, accuracy, and neatness.
- Willingness to keep abreast of changing technologies and to assume new responsibilities required by the introduction of new services and equipment.
- High level of organizational and research skills.
Navajo/Indian preference:
Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimum requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.
EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION
The position is based on the school year.
Days Worked: Monday through Friday
Hours Worked: Varies based on schedule coordination with other Library Support Specialisåt
Note: Notwithstanding the above, this position is subject to possible furlough, or reduction in force under NPS, Inc. Personnel Policies; due to unforeseen reductions in program funding that requires such general program changes.
SUPERVISOR
Associate Head of School for Academics and Operations
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. (NPS) Policies and Procedures.
- Represents NPS in a manner reflecting professionalism and which enhances community understanding of the program.
- Secures and protects the confidentiality of NPS, Inc. in regard to student and faculty personnel matters.
- Knows and follows NPS library policies and procedures.
- Assists students and staff in locating library materials for class assignments, research and independent reading.
- Maintains atmosphere conducive to study.
- Oversees general neatness and attractiveness of library.
- Assists with the supervision of students.
- Answers telephone, takes messages, files paperwork, types correspondence and performs routine office procedures.
- Maintains confidentiality of information.
- Assists with library inventory.
- Safeguards and secures library facility, materials, and equipment.
- Reports to work on time every day.
- Evaluates, selects, and completes requisitions for the acquisition of new library materials.
- Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Models and promotes the IB Leaner Profile and international mindedness throughout campus.
- Counsels with and gives reading guidance to students for both research projects and leisure reading.
- Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the library acquires.
- Provides for own professional growth through ongoing program of reading, and as scheduled by supervisor, accepts and actively participates in training related to the job. Makes use of the knowledge and skills learned on the job.
- Relates and interacts with colleagues, supervisors, other school staff, students, parents, and community members in a professional manner.
- Promotes appropriate conduct of students using library facilities.
- Supports the IB Diploma Programme by providing library materials available to supplement the instructional program.
- Serves as a consultant to faculty in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and in planning instructional activities which involve library resources.
- Facilitates students in developing habits of independent research work and developing skills in the use of reference works.
- Participates in Atsa Committee activities and takes initiative to support CAS, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and IB Core Components.
- Assists with the Atsa Extended Essay research process.
- Supports the Extended Essay program by working closely with supervisors and the Extended Essay Coordinator to provide research skill trainings and resource acquisition for essay writing.
- Organizes local library research excursions for Internal Assessment (IA) and Extended Essay (EE) support.
- Partners with local libraries to share resources through interlibrary loan of materials of interest or use by faculty and students.
- Engage in cooperative planning with faculty and team teaching in areas that involve the library.

Will be evaluated in accordance with the Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. policies and procedures.
