Duties include managing a busy health office, maintaining health records, dispensing medication, implementing health mandates, providing support to families, students, and staff and other duties as assigned by the Principal. |

Additional Responsibilities for School Nurse
- Provide basic healthcare to students in case of injury or acute illness
- Assist students to achieve optimal levels of wellness through differentiated and appropriately designed and delivered health education and health care practices
- Maintain and organize an orderly atmosphere within the health office to create a safe physical, emotional, and intellectual environment
- Ensure the school environment is safe for children and school staff
- Utilize evidence-based practice supported by current research
- Monitor compliance of school health programs with federal, state and local laws, regulations, and policies
- Administer medication
- Monitor student immunization records
- Detect health problems in early stages through regular screenings
- Keep track of students’ vaccination records
- Update students’ medical history
- Perform hearing, vision, and other health screenings
- Reflect on student health outcomes to assess the effectiveness of the health office
- Keep families informed of health office visits involving significant injuries or illness, as appropriate
- Apprise families of progress and issues in chronic disease management.
- Inform families of major public health initiatives (e.g., screenings, flu clinics).
- Consistently protect the students’ autonomy, dignity, rights, values, and beliefs when delivering care while recognizing cultural diversity
- Collaborate with administrative and educational staff through staff meetings and membership in student support teams, crisis teams, and wellness committees
- Develop IHCP, 504 plans, or assist with the development of Individual Educational Plans
- Assist students, families, school staff, and community to achieve optimum levels of wellness through a systematic method of appropriately designed and delivered presentations/ training of health/wellness issues.
- Collaborate with administration and other colleagues sharing their expertise to make appropriate health and safety decisions for students and staff.
- Consult with Health Care Providers, Specialists, MASSTART, Nurse Educators, Community Agencies, Mental Health Providers, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, local Boards of Health, and Student Support Teams to improve practice in specific areas.
