The Senior BESS Engineer serves as a key resource within the Construction team, assisting in the review of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects and providing technical due diligence to support the advisory team. The role will contribute to the technical review of BESS projects and co-located renewable energy portfolios for investors, financing parties, developers, and project owners across all stages of the asset lifecycle.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to the technical review of BESS projects and portfolios for investors, financing parties, developers, and project owners
- Lead and contribute to writing and reviewing due diligence and independent engineering reports focused on energy storage technology and systems
- Review BESS project designs, system configurations, and integration studies for code compliance, industry standards, and project requirements
- Evaluate BESS system specifications including battery chemistry, power conversion systems (PCS), thermal management, and battery management systems (BMS)
- Assess performance models, cycle life analyses, degradation assumptions, and state-of-health projections for energy storage assets
- Develop skills in storage technology reviews as a core area of expertise, including standalone and co-located (solar storage) configurations, grid services capabilities, and revenue stacking strategies, operating agreements, electrical engineering, and financial model reviews
- Conduct site visits for BESS and co-located renewable energy projects across development, construction, and operational phases
- Responsible for the on-time, on-quality, and on-budget delivery of tasks assigned to you
- Provide clear technical advice and communicate complex BESS engineering and risk topics to clients, investors, and lenders
- Demonstrate good communication skills, both oral and written, vertically and across the organization
- Maintain and improve internal project databases, technology trackers, and knowledge management resources
- This position may require up to 20% travel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from accredited university or college in Engineering or related technical discipline
- 5 years of experience in solar project design, engineering, or development, with at least 2 years in a role involving technical review, independent assessment, or consulting advisory work. Candidates with 3 - 4 years of highly relevant experience may be considered at the Engineer level
- Working knowledge of BESS technology
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards including as applied to energy storage.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Advanced degree and EIT certification preferred.
- Experience in independent engineering, technical due diligence, or consulting roles for BESS projects
- Familiarity with solar technology and co-located solar storage configurations
- Experience in more than one renewable energy source
- Experience with travel and project site visits

Compensation for this role typically ranges from $110,000 to $170,000 annually, with flexibility based on your experience, skills, and unique contributions.
