Position Description

Natividad is currently seeking to fill a permanent full-time Supervising Nurse II in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The Supervising Nurse II has full-time 24-hour responsibility for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and performs professional nursing care duties, under the direction of the Nursing Services Division Manager who has charge of the division on a 24-hour basis.
Examples of Duties
- Establish and make adjustments to nursing schedules to distribute required nursing skills on three shifts and request changes in staffing on the basis of changing ward census, workload, and needs of patients; Through consultation and briefing, promote effective communication with physicians, other disciplines, hospital continuity of care nurses, and charge nurses of other shifts to ensure continuous, adequate treatment and care of the patient within the hospital on all shifts and after release.
- Develop or assign and review the development and modification of plans which reflect up-to-date doctors’ orders, a nursing evaluation of each patient’s needs and responses to medical and nursing care, and provide safe nursing care; Make regular administrative and nursing rounds to evaluate the quality of nursing care; Receive and assure executive of physicians’ orders.
- Serve as the principal unit liaison, coordinating and resource nurse-in-charge.
- Maintain contact with other disciplines, agencies, and health facilities of the County for referral of the patient for rehabilitative or other care, or for solution of economic and other non-nursing problems.
- Counsel nursing staff who need aid or training in methods of evaluating aspects of patient care, such as, safety, environment, and available patient and family knowledge and skills of planning care, or of instructing the family in ways and means of providing medication, treatment, personal and bed care; Interpret nursing philosophy, goals, hospital and nursing policies and procedures governing patient car, security, safety, visiting conditions, supportive services and unit operation.
- Investigate incidents and review and prepare reports on incidents involving patients, employees, and visitors; Investigate and answer queries from physicians, patients, and visitors about patient care.
- Define areas where training is needed to nursing education staff, Staff Nurse III, and the Nursing Services Division Managers; Plan and conduct unit staff conferences for training or to solve patient care problems; Evaluate and review evaluations of employee performance.
- Prepare formal answers to and recommend the adjustment of grievances and disciplinary action; Develop standardized nursing care plans appropriate to the categories of patients seen on the ward or unit; Conduct methods improvement studies and implement new methods and approaches of providing care.

Thorough knowledge of:
- The various roles and responsibilities of nursing team members.
- Basic supervision.
- Nursing techniques and procedures used in the care of patients treated in the unit.
- Facility policies and procedures.
- Supervise the actions and activities of Staff Nurse I, Staff Nurse II, Staff Nurse III, Licensed Vocational Nurse, Nursing Assistant, and Medical Unit Clerk.
- Demonstrate competency in all patient care skills specific to patients treated in the unit.
- Communicate effectively and with diplomacy and tact.
- Interact with physicians, nursing staff, ancillary staff, patients, and the public to resolve issues of concern and promote effective delivery of patient care
Education:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university
Must possess a minimum of three years’ experience as a registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, with at least 1 year in a leadership/supervisory role.
A license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Nursing Education and Nurse Registration.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit must also possess the following (in accordance with the California Children’s Services Manual of Procedures Chapters 3.25.3): Evidence of successful completion of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program course of the AAP and AHA, and a valid certificate in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing from a nationally recognized accrediting organization, i.e., National Certification Corporation (NCC).
Additional Information
- Natividad requires that all incumbents pass a pre-employment physical/medical assessment.
- Natividad will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which includes a Department of Justice fingerprint check.
- Employees who drive on County business to carry out job related duties must possess a valid CA Driver License for the class vehicle driven and clean driving record.
- Employees must have and show their original Social Security Card and a valid CA Driver License or CA State ID prior to the first day of work.
- Incumbents may be required to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays;
