POSITION: Program Intern, Medical, Part-Time
DEPARTMENT: Medical
REPORTS TO: Director of Medical Operations
LOCATION: 2950 International Blvd., Oakland, CA 94601
WORK HOURS: Part Time, 50% FTE (20 hours per week)
STATUS: Non-Exempt, Non-Union, Temporary

 

POSITION SUMMARY
The Program Intern, Medical at our local community clinic will be an integral part of our medical department, supporting our efforts to improve the health and well-being of the community. As a Program Intern, Medical, you will work closely with our healthcare team to assist with patient outreach, education, and engagement. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in gaining practical experience in the healthcare field and making a positive impact on the lives of community members.

The Native American Health Center is an accredited institution and adheres to the standards of excellence set forth by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA).

This is a 13-week temporary job and Is grant funded.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Patient Outreach: Conduct outreach activities to identify community members in need of healthcare services, especially those who may face barriers to accessing care.
2. Health Education: Collaborate with healthcare professionals to develop and deliver health education programs, workshops, and materials for the community on various topics, including preventive care, chronic disease management, nutrition, and mental health.
3. Health Screenings: Assist in organizing and conducting health screenings, such as blood pressure checks, blood glucose tests, and BMI assessments, to identify health issues early and provide appropriate referrals.
4. Referral Support: Help patients navigate the healthcare system by providing information and support for accessing medical services, specialists, and community resources.
5. Home Visits: Conduct home visits for patients who face challenges in attending clinic appointments, to monitor their health status, provide education, and ensure adherence to treatment plans.
6. Data Collection and Reporting: Accurately record patient interactions, outreach efforts, and program outcomes to support data-driven decision-making and program evaluation.
7. Cultural Competence: Show sensitivity to the cultural, social, and economic diversity of the community, ensuring that healthcare services are delivered in a respectful and culturally appropriate manner.
8. Community Partnerships: Collaborate with community organizations, local agencies, and stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and enhance the clinic's reach and impact.
9. Administrative Support: Provide administrative support to the medical department, including scheduling appointments, managing patient records, and assisting with office tasks as needed.
10. Training and Professional Development: Participate in training sessions and workshops  to enhance your knowledge and skills as a Community Health Worker Intern.

 

Qualifications


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
1. Must have high school diploma or its equivalent
2. Genuine interest in community health and a strong commitment to improving the well-being of underserved populations.
3. Compassionate, empathetic, and effective communication skills to engage with diverse individuals and build rapport with patients.
4. Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work with individuals from various backgrounds and experiences.
5. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate records and documentation.
6. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a healthcare team.
7. Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office) and willingness to learn new software as required.
8. Bilingual proficiency (in languages relevant to the community) is an advantage but not required.
9. For licensed track candidates, clinical supervision is available.
