Summary

This is a temporary position not to exceed 1039 hours.

This is an excepted service appointment that does not confer competitive status.

The typical season for this position is March through September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is March 2026.

These positions offer two work schedules listed below. In the application process you will be prompted to indicate the work schedule you wish to be considered for. When prompted you may select one work schedule or both.

  • Full-time
  • Part-time (24 hours per week)


If selected, you will work as a Recreation Fee Technician, GS-0503-05, at Denali National Park and Preserve. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Collecting and accounting for mountaineering special use and park entrance fees, issuing NPS passes, and maintaining accountability records.
  • Answers questions, often of a repetitive nature, and provides climbing registration guidance and other resource information to mountaineers, as well as to the non-climbing public in a mountaineering and visitor contact station.
  • Advises visitors of park regulations and explains the importance of such in order to encourage visitor support for protection of the resources and/or safety of visitors.
  • Answers the telephone, responds to email and written correspondence, and handles mail pickup, sorting, and delivery to staff.
  • Assists with maintaining a tidy and safe atmosphere in the visitor center, coordinates routine front desk operations, and completes special projects assigned by the supervisor.

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to two nights per month.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Fee Collection duties apply, if selected for this position, you will be required to receive a higher-level background investigation for Fee Collection.

Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required. Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

Areas considered "near" the Talkeetna and Trapper Creek duty stations include: Big Lake, Cantwell, Chase, Chulitna, Curry, Denali Park, Farm Loop, Ferry, Healy, Kantishna, Knik, Lake Minchumina, Meadow Lakes, McKinley Village, Nenana, Nikolai, Palmer, Petersville, Sunshine, Talkeetna, Tanana, Telida, Trapper Creek, Wasilla, and Willow.

  • Ability to collect fees and perform accounting and handling operations.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a high volume of personal contacts and communicate with others under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to operate business-oriented equipment, computer systems, and associated software.
  • Ability to verify reports, troubleshoot errors, and prepare deposits and remittances.

There is no substitution of education for the required special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof as outlined in this announcement.

Additional information

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Government housing is not available.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.

Selectee may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries.

Physical Demands: This position requires standing for long periods of time, as well as walking, bending, and lifting of moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to the high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money. If applicable, extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue, wildland firefighting, or emergency response duties.

Working Conditions: This position typically works at an entrance station, campground office, fee office, remit office, visitor center, and/or visitor contact station. Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain, or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may be performed alone and/or in isolated locations.
