What are the responsibilities and job description for the Marketing Communications Manager position at National Motorists Association?
About the National Motorists Association
Founded in 1982, the National Motorists Association (NMA) is a national nonprofit membership and advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the rights and freedoms of motorists.
NMA gives motorists a voice on issues that affect them—from transportation policy and legislation to traffic enforcement, due process, and individual freedom.
About the Position
The NMA is seeking a creative, motivated, and highly capable Marketing & Communications Manager to help grow membership, strengthen member engagement and retention, expand NMA's reach, support fundraising, and tell the NMA story to motorists across the country.
This is a hands-on position with significant responsibility and room to make an impact. The successful candidate will manage day-to-day marketing and communications activities, including the NMA website, social media, email communications, membership campaigns, direct-mail fundraising, and Driving Freedoms magazine.
Working closely with the CEO and other NMA staff, you'll help develop campaigns, create compelling messages, coordinate production, execute communications, and measure results.
We're looking for someone who can think strategically but, more importantly, can get things done. You'll have the opportunity to develop an idea, write the copy, build the campaign, launch it, measure the results, and make it better the next time.
If you're the kind of person who sees an opportunity and thinks, "I can make that better," this may be the position for you.
Key Responsibilities
Membership & Marketing
- Develop and execute campaigns to attract new members and retain existing ones.
- Manage membership recruitment, renewal, retention, and re-engagement communications.
- Develop targeted campaigns using email, direct mail, social media, web content, and other channels.
- Communicate the value of NMA membership and member benefits.
- Test messaging, offers, audiences, and calls to action to improve results.
- Monitor membership trends and campaign performance and recommend improvements.
Digital Communications
- Manage and continually improve the NMA website.
- Create and publish website content, articles, announcements, and campaign materials.
- Manage NMA's social media presence and content calendar.
- Develop email newsletters, member communications, fundraising appeals, and promotional campaigns.
- Monitor website, email, and social media analytics.
- Work with outside developers, designers, and vendors when needed.
Content & Communications
- Write and edit articles, newsletters, web content, direct-mail pieces, fundraising appeals, social media posts, and other communications.
- Turn complex motorist, legal, legislative, and organizational issues into communications that are clear, relevant, and engaging.
- Maintain a consistent NMA voice, message, and brand.
- Work with the CEO and staff to identify stories, accomplishments, advocacy activities, and issues that should be communicated.
Driving Freedoms Magazine
- Manage production of Driving Freedoms from editorial planning through publication.
- Develop editorial calendars and production schedules.
- Coordinate with writers, photographers, designers, printers, and other vendors.
- Write, edit, and proofread content as needed.
- Coordinate membership, fundraising, advocacy, and promotional content.
- Extend magazine content through the website, email, social media, and other channels.
Fundraising
- Develop and coordinate direct-mail and online fundraising campaigns in partnership with the CEO.
- Write fundraising letters, appeals, postcards, inserts, email appeals, and related materials.
- Coordinate mailing lists, design, printing, production, and fulfillment.
- Track response rates, revenue, costs, average gift, donor acquisition, and other campaign results.
- Help develop communications to acquire new donors, reactivate lapsed donors, and strengthen relationships with existing supporters.
Analytics & Campaign Performance
- Track the performance of membership, fundraising, email, website, social media, and other marketing efforts.
- Use data to determine what is working—and what isn't.
- Test different messages, audiences, formats, and calls to action.
- Recommend changes that improve results and make better use of NMA resources.
- Provide regular reports and updates to the CEO.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is both creative and practical—someone who can develop good ideas and then make them happen.
You should have:
- 3 years of relevant professional experience in marketing, communications, digital marketing, journalism, public relations, membership marketing, or a related field—or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and demonstrated results.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Experience managing websites and social media.
- Experience creating email and/or direct-mail campaigns.
- Strong organizational and project-management skills.
- The ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail.
- The ability to work independently and take ownership of projects.

Experience That Would Be a Plus

- Membership recruitment or retention experience.
- Fundraising or donor communications experience.
- Magazine, newsletter, or publication experience.
- WordPress or another content management system.
- Mailchimp or another email marketing platform.

The Right Person
You don't need to know everything on day one. We care more about your ability to learn, take initiative, communicate well, and get results.
The right candidate will be a great writer and a self-starter: hands-on, creative, organized, dependable, comfortable with numbers, adaptable, and resourceful. You should enjoy taking ownership of projects, solving problems, and finding better ways to reach people.
An interest in NMA's mission and a genuine desire to help advance the rights and freedoms of motorists are important.
What Success Looks Like
During the first year, the successful candidate will help NMA:
- Strengthen and professionalize its marketing and communications program.
- Develop measurable campaigns that support membership growth, retention, and fundraising.
- Improve engagement across NMA's website, email, social media, and other communications channels.
- Successfully manage the production of Driving Freedoms on schedule and to a high standard.
- Establish practical marketing and fundraising metrics that help NMA understand what is working.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $65,000–$78,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
The NMA offers:
- A 4.5-day work week, with Friday afternoons off, except when occasional organizational needs require otherwise.
- Generous paid time off for vacation, sick leave, and other needs, with additional PTO based on years of employment.
- Ten company-paid holidays.
- Performance bonus opportunities based on fundraising and membership results.
- An individual company-funded Simple IRA account for eligible full-time employees.
- A company-funded QSEHRA health benefit providing tax-free reimbursement for eligible individual and family health, dental, and vision expenses, subject to plan terms and annual limits.
The position is based at the NMA's office in Waunakee, Wisconsin. Some travel and occasional evening or weekend work may be required for NMA meetings, events, or other organizational activities.
Why Join the NMA?
This is an opportunity to have a direct impact on a national organization with a unique mission.
You won't be one small piece of a large corporate marketing department. You'll have meaningful responsibility and the opportunity to take projects from concept to completion.
You'll work closely with the CEO and other NMA staff, and your work will reach members, supporters, motorists, policymakers, and the public across the country.
If you enjoy having ownership, solving problems, creating things, and seeing the results of your work, we'd like to hear from you.
