What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dog Care Technician - Closing Shift position at National Mill Dog Rescue?

Purpose: Working with closing staff and volunteers, perform and confirm team completion of closing duties as assigned including but not limited to evening feeding, medication delivery, laundry, spot cleaning, providing enrichment, welfare checks, refilling water bowls, final evening walkthrough, turning off lights and locking up the facility for the night.

Key Responsibilities and Duties – Other duties may be assigned.

Facility Cleaning Duties

  • Ensure all dogs are fed their appropriate end of day meals
  • Make note of inventory needs for dog related supplies
  • Administer medication to dogs on medical treatment plan when trained . Document accurate accounts of medication administration.
  • Review and note necessary medication refills and treatment sheet edits for accuracy and completion
  • Confirm all runs are clean with appropriate bedding and water buckets are full and accessible
  • Check and confirm all dogs are unseparated in runs and in appropriate locations
  • Leave calming music at appropriate levels
  • Turn off all heating and cooling units as directed
  • Confirm all shelter doors are locked
  • Provide evening enrichment for dogs in care as directed.Follow facility protocols to clean and maintain indoor and outdoor kennel areas in such a manner as to provide an odor free and low stress environment.
  • Adhere to facility protocols to provide proper amounts of food, fresh water and bedding.
  • Follow appropriate protocols for any observed behavioral or medical situations.
  • Report any concerns or issues appropriately, using established protocols.
  • Read and follow kennel signs related to the dog’s medical and or behavioral requirements.
  • Handle additional tasks and assignments upon supervisor’s request.
  • Work and interact professionally with peers, volunteers, staff, and visitors.

Customer Service

  • Provide quality customer service to families, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs, and events.
  • Represent National Mill Dog Rescue in a professional and courteous manner at all times, including proper dress.

Safety

  • Ensure a safe work environment by following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices.
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal, or the organization at risk.

Volunteers

  • Work cooperatively with all volunteers and realize the talent and commitment they bring to National Mill Dog Rescue.

Skills and Experience

  • Prior rescue or professional dog care/handling experience required
  • Prior Vet Assistant experience a plus
  • Must be comfortable administering oral medications, optical and skin ointments and occasion injections to dogs in our care. .
  • Must be familiar with canine body language and be confident interacting with unknown scared and shy dogs.
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced environment with a diverse group of workers.
  • Must be able to read and follow simple written or verbal instructions.
  • Must be 18 years old. High School diploma (or GED) required.
  • Must be a team player.

Physical Requirements / Work Conditions

  • Will be required to work in a noisy, odorous environment
  • Must be able to work hands on with dogs.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive up/down and sideways scrubbing and motion utilizing hands, arms and shoulders.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 35 pounds for short distances; 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Must be able to walk, restrain and handle (utilizing leash or manual) dogs of all sizes.
  • Must be able to occasionally climb, balance, crouch or crawl.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel and handle equipment including power washers, hoses, buckets, mops and squeegees for an entire shift.
  • While performing essential duties of this job, employees are regularly exposed to noxious odors, fumes or airborne particles, allergens, toxic or caustic chemicals; and potentially volatile situations which can present risk of violence or injury. PPE will be provided as needed and is required when appropriate.

  • We are a 7 day/week business and our FT closers work 5 shifts per week. Shifts typically start at 11am or 12pm and end around 7pm but may require some work outsite of these hours.
