Position Description
New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) seeks a Staff Attorney to join our nonprofit law firm. The Staff Attorney will have generalist duties, with a significant focus on domestic violence protective order and family law cases and additional work in NHLA’s housing and public benefits practices. This position will be a great fit for an attorney who enjoys handling a variety of different case types and learning new subject matter.
Office space (which may be shared) for the Staff Attorney is available in NHLA’s Concord, Manchester, Berlin, or Claremont offices. NHLA has a remote work policy under which two days per week of remote work is typically approved. All NHLA staff members are provided with the necessary equipment (such as laptop computers) to work remotely.
Regular in-state travel throughout New Hampshire is required. Occasional travel out of state, for example to national conferences, is anticipated. Travel reimbursement including mileage is provided.

This is a full-time position. Full-time is defined as 37.5 hours per week. This position is considered exempt for the purpose of federal wage/hour law.
The anticipated salary for the position depends on prior law practice experience, expected to range from $70,000 per year (for candidates with 0 years of prior law practice experience) to $80,526 per year (for candidates with 5 years of prior law practice experience). Higher salary is available for candidates with more than 5 years of prior law practice experience (NHLA is committed to salary transparency for candidates; details provided upon request). Additional compensation of $1,500 per year is available for staff members who are fluent in at least one language in addition to English and willing to use the second language in their work. The position is eligible for the NHLA employee benefits package including medical/dental insurance for the employee and the employee’s family members, 401(k) contributions, and generous paid time off.

- Handle cases for individual clients across practice areas and forums;
- Maintain a primary focus on domestic violence protective order and family law cases and a secondary focus on housing and public benefits cases;
- After building relevant expertise, participate in outreach and community engagement efforts such as educational presentations and webinars;
- Learn and implement NHLA’s holistic, client-centered approach to civil legal aid, including trauma-informed delivery of legal services;
- Participate as a team member in the Staff Attorney’s assigned office.
