Job Description

The Air Quality Monitoring intern will join the Impacts Analysis Group within The NLR Strategic Energy Analysis Center (SEAC; www.nlr.gov/analysis), alongside researchers who perform a variety of environmental sustainability assessments of energy technologies. With objective, technology-neutral analysis, SEAC aims to increase understanding of energy policies, markets, resources, technologies, and infrastructure to address U.S. economic, security, and environmental priorities. Internship Responsibilities

The Air Quality Monitoring Intern will support research activities related to community air quality monitoring in Kern County and the San Joaquin Valley.

Example Activities

  • Research and synthesize best practices for community air quality monitoring networks
  • Review existing air quality monitoring programs in California and the region
  • Support development of design configurations for low-cost sensor networks
  • Assist with environmental data collection and analysis
  • Help develop community science and educational materials

This position has a preference for in-person work arrangements based in Golden, CO, at the NLR South Table Mountain (STM) Campus.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student in Environmental Science, Engineering, Atmospheric Science, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in carbon management technologies and/or environmental monitoring.
  • Basic skills in data handling and technical documentation.
  • Good written communication and oral presentation skills and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently on assigned tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with carbon management technologies (e.g., DAC, CCS, BiCRS).
  • Experience with low-cost air quality sensors or environmental field data collection.
  • Experience publishing technical content to technical audiences
  • Experience presenting in public forums and creation of professional-quality PowerPoint presentations
  • Experience writing educational materials for diverse student audiences
  • Exposure to life cycle assessment (LCA) or techno-economic analysis (TEA) is a plus.
  • Prior experience working on applied research or community science projects.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Travel to Kern County or participation in site visits at NLR may be required.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $34,800 - $55,700

NLR takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

Benefits Summary

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NLR employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.

Badging Requirement

NLR is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as required by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), which includes a favorable background investigation. Intern assignments extending beyond six months will be subject to this requirement.
