Scrap Yard Technician
National Iron & Metals, LLC is a growing scrap metal recycling company located in Katy, Texas. We are looking for a dependable, hardworking individual to join our team. This position primarily works in our scrap recycling yard processing ferrous and non-ferrous metals while assisting customers and helping maintain a safe, efficient operation. Employees who demonstrate a strong work ethic and mechanical ability may also have opportunities to assist with industrial machinery removal and special projects at customer facilities.
Job Responsibilities
- Load and unload customer vehicles using forklifts and other material handling equipment.
- Assist customers with unloading scrap materials safely and efficiently.
- Sort, clean, process, and prepare ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals for shipment.
- Learn to identify and separate different grades of copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, insulated wire, and other recyclable materials (training provided).
- Operate forklifts, skid steers, loaders, and other equipment safely (experience is a plus; training available).
- Use hand tools and power tools including impacts, grinders, saws, and other shop equipment.
- Assist with loading trailers, roll-off containers, and outbound shipments.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow all company safety procedures and wear required PPE.
- Occasionally assist with industrial machinery removal, demolition, and dismantling projects at customer facilities.
Qualifications
- Dependable with a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
- Physically able to lift 50 pounds or more on a regular basis.
- Comfortable working outdoors year-round in Texas heat, cold, rain, and other weather conditions.
- Mechanically inclined and comfortable working with hand and power tools.
- Able to work safely around heavy equipment and moving machinery.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willing to learn and grow with the company.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a scrap yard, recycling facility, construction, demolition, warehouse, manufacturing, or heavy equipment environment.
- Forklift, skid steer, or loader experience.
- Torch cutting or welding experience is a plus.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
- Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metals is a plus, but we are willing to train the right candidate.
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be able to pass a background check and meet customer site access requirements.
- This position supports work at industrial facilities, including defense-related customers. Applicants must be able to meet all customer security and site access requirements, which may include U.S. citizenship for certain projects.
- Overtime and occasional Saturdays may be required.
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily outdoors.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, and carrying materials.
- Regular exposure to heavy equipment, dust, noise, and changing weather conditions.
