 JOB DESCRIPTION 

Job Title:    Criminology and Emergency Response Management Instructor

Reports To:  Lead Instructor or Program Director

FLSA:           Non-Exempt                      

DEFINITION

Each instructor is responsible for communicating class content to students so that learning occurs, skills are developed, and students are motivated to continue to learn and to achieve their educational objectives.  With daily supervision provided by the Lead Instructor or Program Director, all instructors will be ultimately responsible to the Director of Education. Instructors also perform related work as required. 

SAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Update the syllabus for each course as assigned- revision limited to include instructor name, contact and office hours.
  • Distribute a class syllabus to all students within the first two class sessions.  
  • Teach the depth and scope class material as outlined in the syllabus and approved course outline.
  • Relate instruction to careers and employer expectations.
  • Prepare and grade examinations based upon course objectives.
  • Administer examinations according to schedule announced to students in course outline.
  • Work creatively to discourage student withdrawal in all classes taught.
  • Begin class at the designated time and provide a full period of instruction for the class period involved.
  • Leaves the classroom or laboratory clean, organized, and ready for the module.
  • Submit, at designated time, final grades for all students and maintain weekly grade sheets.
  • Accurately enter attendance on the attendance roster indicating a student's presence in their class.
  • Call all students who are absent and report pertinent information to the Student Success Leader.
  • Attend communication meetings, faculty meetings, in-service sessions, student orientation, graduation, and other school events as required by the school.
  • Dress professionally in accordance with faculty dress code.
  • Tutor and mentor students who are having difficulty with course material.
  • Perform other responsibilities as approved by the Director of Education and coordinated through the Division Director. 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The Instructor shall demonstrate experience and education as required by the State Regulatory Agency where the school presides and in accordance with the guidelines established by the schools accrediting body for the coursework that the instructor is teaching.

  • Clearly communicate information and ideas through spoken words so others will understand. 
  • Identify and understand the speech of another person. 
  • Recognize when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. 
  • Read and understand information and ideas presented in writing. 
  • Communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Instructors teaching technical and occupationally related courses in either non-degree or occupational associate degree programs must have a minimum of three years of related practical work experience in the subject area(s) taught. Instructors teaching applied general education courses in an occupational associate degree program must have a baccalaureate degree with appropriate coursework and preparation in the subject area(s) taught; or, eight years related practical work experience and college-level coursework in the subject area(s) taught. 

Field Experience

In the HRA field specifically, it would be helpful (not required) to have a PHR certification; For our General Education classes, there is a minimum requirement of a Master’s Degree in any field and 15 units of related college class work for the subject being taught.

Other

A valid Driver's License may be required. 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work under pressure of constant deadlines with frequent interruptions.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Noise exposure under 65 decibels, roughly that of a normal conversation or a ringing telephone.
  • Schedule changes may occur based on business needs.
  • May be required to travel to locations other than assigned site.
