NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55 ) with the National Park Service (NPS). These experienced professionals provide administrative expertise, facilities management, natural and cultural resource planning, and a broad array of other professional skills that support the National Park Service through the Experienced Services Program (ESP).

Positions listed here do not guarantee employment for any definite period. Enrollment in the Experienced Worker Programs administered by NEW Solutions is temporary. The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an ?at-will? relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee.

PLEASE NOTE: An ?Enrollee? is not a federal employee, nor an employee of NEW Solutions. An ?Enrollee? is a participant in a grant program established through a Cooperative Agreement funded by the agency and administered by NEW Solutions.

Qualifications:


MA/MS Degree in History; Social Sciences; Community Engagement/Research; Exhibit Planning/Design; Museum/Cultural Studies; Heritage Studies; and other similar fields with minimum additional experience of 15 year(s) in Exhibit planning/design for museums or other cultural institutions; Project management; Community-based research; Community organizing/facilitation; Partnership development/management

  • Broad knowledge of and considerable experience in the use of all interpretive and education media, including knowledge of the roles of exhibits, publications, audiovisuals, and digital interpretation (i.e., augmented reality, distance learning, etc.) in conveying park themes and stories to diverse audiences without impairing park resources.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams, MS Outlook, MS SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat
Duties:


This position will provide technical assistance and project support for the development and enhancement of interpretive exhibits and related media for BICR and FRRI. Activities will emphasize community-based research and engagement, including reviewing exhibit content, identifying and documenting community-sourced materials, supporting oral history research and collection, and facilitating input from community advisors. The participant will collaborate with National Park Service staff and partners to ensure interpretive products reflect diverse perspectives, are grounded in documented community knowledge, and align with established interpretive goals and project scopes.

  • Review content for BICR and FRRI interpretive exhibit design deliverables developed by NPS units and designated exhibit design firm and provide actionable input, edits, resources, etc., rooted in community knowledge. Provide community-based research derived documentation and/or connections for exhibit enhancement, adhering to current and potentially augmented exhibit scope. 25%
  • Identify and document relevant community donations and contributions of cultural materials, artifacts, etc., for potential inclusion in exhibits in coordination with designated NPS units (e.g., IR2 Interpretation; Harpers Ferry Center) and park collections guidance documents. 25%
  • Review existing oral histories from the BICR Oral History Project (2020-22 and 2021-24) and FRRI Oral History Project (2025-26) for thematic relevancy and for possible inclusion in exhibits working with designated NPS units. Identify and recruit additional community members for oral history collection based on project need/relevance. Validate and collect oral histories in collaboration with NPS units. 25%
  • Name and interface with a community-based advisory committee, made up of 3-5 members separate from project team, to provide additional insight and advice. (Note: An honorarium may be provided to committee members for their service). Recommend and recruit local civil right influencers (individuals, organizations, locations) who may be featured in the exhibits. 25%
