National Energy Installers, LLC
Costa Mesa, CA
Full-Time, In-Person
About Us
National Energy Installers, LLC is a growing energy infrastructure company specializing in the design, engineering, and construction of complex commercial and industrial energy projects. Our work includes solar PV, battery energy storage systems, EV charging infrastructure, microgrids, generators, and advanced distributed energy resources.
Our projects serve commercial, industrial, multifamily, affordable housing, nonprofit, and institutional clients throughout California and other parts of the United States. As our project portfolio continues to expand, we are building a highly capable in-house engineering team to support the full lifecycle of project development, design, permitting, construction, commissioning, and long-term system performance.
We are looking for a senior-level engineer who can help lead the technical direction of our projects, build and strengthen our in-house engineering standards, and support the continued growth of the company while working directly under the guidance of our CEO, who has more than 20 years of hands-on technical and industry experience in the solar, energy storage, and distributed energy sectors.
Position Overview
National Energy Installers is seeking a highly experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer with strong expertise in commercial solar PV, battery energy storage systems, EV charging, microgrids, generators, and utility interconnection.
This position is intended for a senior technical leader who can take ownership of complex electrical designs, guide internal and external engineering teams, support permitting and utility approvals, review equipment and system architecture, and help solve real-world field and construction challenges.
The ideal candidate will have deep experience with commercial and industrial electrical systems, distributed energy resources, power systems, utility interconnection, NEC compliance, fire code requirements, and project execution from concept through commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead electrical design and technical development for commercial solar PV, BESS, EV charging, microgrid, and generator-integrated projects.
- Prepare, review, and oversee permit-ready electrical plan sets, single-line diagrams, site layouts, equipment layouts, wiring diagrams, conduit schedules, grounding details, and engineering calculations.
- Review and develop system designs for PV arrays, inverters, transformers, switchgear, BESS equipment, EMS controls, generators, and utility interconnection points.
- Perform or oversee energy production modeling, battery sizing, load analysis, export control strategies, demand management strategies, and system performance evaluations.
- Support utility interconnection applications and technical reviews for projects ranging from smaller commercial systems to large-scale 1 MW AC interconnected systems.
- Review electrical infrastructure, service equipment, switchgear, transformer capacity, breaker ratings, bus ratings, CT metering configurations, and point-of-interconnection options.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards, including NEC, California Electrical Code, California Fire Code, utility requirements, AHJ requirements, and applicable equipment listing requirements.
- Coordinate with utilities, AHJs, project developers, architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, EPC teams, subcontractors, vendors, and customers.
- Support permitting, plan check corrections, technical RFIs, procurement reviews, construction support, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Review vendor equipment specifications, technical submittals, product data, test reports, and installation requirements.
- Assist with feasibility studies, conceptual designs, preliminary budgets, technical due diligence, and project risk reviews.
- Help establish internal engineering standards, design templates, quality-control procedures, and best practices.
- Mentor junior engineers, designers, CAD staff, and project team members.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering field.
- 10 years of relevant electrical engineering experience, preferably with commercial, industrial, utility-scale, or distributed energy projects.
- Strong experience with commercial solar PV and/or battery energy storage system design.
- Strong understanding of commercial electrical distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, grounding, overcurrent protection, short-circuit considerations, and utility interconnection.
- Experience preparing or reviewing electrical plan sets, single-line diagrams, engineering calculations, and technical submittals.
- Working knowledge of NEC, CEC, fire code requirements, utility interconnection standards, and permitting processes.
- Experience with engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope, ETAP, SKM, Energy Toolbase, or similar platforms.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work directly with internal teams, customers, AHJs, utilities, vendors, and subcontractors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer license preferred, California PE strongly preferred.
- Experience with BESS systems, PCS equipment, transformers, EMS controls, export controls, and microgrid design.
- Experience with EV charging infrastructure and fleet charging design.
- Experience integrating generators, natural gas engines, turbines, or backup power systems with solar and battery systems.
- Experience with SCADA, EMS platforms, Modbus, utility monitoring, metering, telemetry, and control systems.
- Experience supporting commissioning, field troubleshooting, and construction-phase engineering.
- Experience with power system studies, including short-circuit, coordination, arc flash, load flow, and protection studies.
- NABCEP certification is a plus.
- Experience building or managing internal engineering standards is a plus.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is not just a plan-set engineer. We are looking for someone who understands how energy projects are actually built, interconnected, permitted, inspected, commissioned, and operated.
This person should be able to look at a project from the earliest development stage, identify the best technical path forward, anticipate utility and AHJ issues, coordinate with the field team, and help deliver practical designs that can be constructed safely, efficiently, and profitably.
Compensation & Benefits
- $160,000 to $240,000 per year, depending on experience, licensing, and qualifications
- Higher compensation may be available for candidates with a California PE license and demonstrated experience leading commercial solar, BESS, EV, microgrid, generator, and utility interconnection projects
