What are the responsibilities and job description for the EMRI Executive Director position at National Bureau of Economic Research?

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) has launched the Economic Measurement Research Institute (EMRI) to support research on the measurement of prices, output, labor market outcomes, technology, and related concepts, as well as demonstration projects that will lead to the implementation of new approaches to the creation of official economic statistics. The Institute is directed by Katharine Abraham (University of Maryland) and Matthew Shapiro (University of Michigan).

The EMRI Will Support

  • Partnerships among researchers, firms, and statistical agencies that are directed at fundamental innovation in economic measurement;
  • Multiple research projects that will create, evaluate, and demonstrate implementable new approaches to economic measurement;
  • The dissemination and translation of research findings on, and the implementation of these new approaches to, economic measurement in both the public and private sectors.

The NBER seeks an Executive Director who will work closely with the co-directors to advance the EMRI’s objectives. The Executive Director will promote scientific collaboration across subprojects, conduct outreach to businesses and statistical agencies, promote and coordinate the acquisition of data and the management of its use, assure the dissemination of EMRI’s research findings and promote their implementation in official statistics, and more generally strive to sustain and broaden EMRI’s activities.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in economics or a closely related discipline together with five or more years of relevant post-Ph.D. work experience. This might include employment with private sector data providers, work within the federal government on the development of statistical data products, and/or employment in a research position that has led to scientific publications on measurement-related topics. The candidate will also have demonstrated success at managing research and promoting translation of research findings into practice; research expertise relevant to economic measurement; demonstrated experience interacting with executive personnel in business and government; the ability to work effectively with researchers of all seniority levels; and strong communications and organizational skills.

The preferred position start date is January 1, 2026. The NBER is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Remote work arrangements consistent with the needs of the project may be considered.

Salary : $150,000 - $200,000
