Who are we?
The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) is the international testing agency for the chiropractic profession. The NBCE develops, administers, and scores standardized exams that assess knowledge, higher-level cognitive abilities, and problem-solving in various basic science and clinical science subjects.
What do we do?
NBCE exams offer assurance to the general public that a chiropractor, regardless of what school they attended or where they were licensed, has demonstrated a baseline of knowledge as well as ability in diagnosis, diagnostic imaging, principles of chiropractic, associated clinical sciences, and chiropractic practice. Candidates typically take NBCE exams before graduating from chiropractic college. Exam scores are made available to licensing authorities within and outside the United States. In the U.S., all 50 states either accept or require candidates to pass Parts I, II, III, and IV for licensure.
ROLE SUMMARY:
The Associate Psychometrician will support the National Board of Chiropractic Examiner’s (NBCE’s) assessment programs through leading or supporting the scoring of NBCE exams and assessments. This role involves routine scoring, the development and maintenance of scoring and reporting systems, automation of analytical processes, and contributions to research initiatives in testing and measurement.
OVERVIEW OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
A. Routine Scoring Lead or Scoring Support (Alternate)
a. Lead or assist in the routine scoring of NBCE examinations, ensuring timely and accurate production of candidate scores.
b. Implement standardized scoring protocols, including calibration, equating, and scaling.
c. Troubleshoot scoring anomalies, investigate irregularities, and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
B. Routine Review of Processes and Maintenance of Systems
a. Regularly assess and refine psychometric workflows, identifying opportunities for efficiency improvements.
b. Collaborate with test development and IT teams to enhance automation, efficiency, and scalability of scoring systems.
c. Maintain compliance with industry standards (AERA, APA, NCME) and licensure/ certification testing best practices.
C. Database Maintenance
a. Manage and update NBCE’s psychometric databases, ensuring data integrity, security, and accessibility.
b. Write and optimize SQL queries to retrieve, clean, and analyze candidate response data, scoring information, and historical records.
D. Reliability and Validity Analyses
a. Conduct reliability analyses to assess test score consistency and precision.
b. Perform validity studies to confirm assessments measure intended constructs (content, construct, and criterion validity).
c. Use item-level and test-level psychometric analyses to identify problematic items and improve overall test reliability.
d. Implement differential item functioning (DIF) analysis to ensure assessments are fair and unbiased across demographic groups.
E. Prepare Technical Documentation, Research Reports, and Internal Presentations.
a. Write/review technical reports summarizing statistical findings, test performance analyses, and psychometric evaluations.
b. Contribute to peer-review publications, conference presentations, and industry white papers to disseminate psychometric research.
F. Contribute to Routine Research
a. Conduct psychometric research studies to explore innovations in test design, scoring, and assessment methodologies.
b. Present research findings at professional conferences, internal meetings, and workshops.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Ph.D. in educational measurement, psychometrics, quantitative psychology, statistics, or a related field.
- Proficiency in linear models, generalized linear models, and multivariate statistical techniques.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Item Response Theory (IRT)-based scoring techniques.
- Advanced knowledge of SQL for data management and querying.
- Programming skills for automation of scoring, analysis, and report production.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex statistical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Must be authorized to work in the United States. NBCE may consider sponsorship if necessary.

COMPENSATION
Hiring Range: $96,700 - $120,875 based on qualifications and experience.
