What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Policy Internship position at National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors (NASADAD)?
The National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors, Inc. (NASADAD), a nonprofit educational, scientific, and informational organization, is now accepting applications for a paid internship position starting in January 2026 within the Public Policy Department. Interns work directly to support the Executive Director on legislative, regulatory, and other matters related to substance use disorders (SUD). This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to working with Congress, government agencies, and other stakeholders on issues pertaining to addiction.
Core responsibilities:
- A core responsibility will be assembling the Association's weekly newsletter. This involves collecting, drafting, and editing stories for the weekly "D.C. Update"
- The public policy intern will also help with scheduling and administrative support related to meetings with NASADAD members, Hill offices, other NGOs, etc.
As a public policy intern, you may also participate in some of the following opportunities:
- Attending briefings or meetings with government agencies, Capitol Hill offices, other non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or others.
- Writing and distributing brief summaries of certain hearings or briefings to the membership.
- Researching issues related to substance use disorders.
- Updating the association website and working on electronic outreach efforts.
- Administrative tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- An interest in learning more about substance use and addiction field.
- Must be available to start in January.
- Must be available to work in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays (NASADAD is conveniently located in downtown Washington, D.C. – near the Farragut West Metro and Farragut North Metro).
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Good communication abilities (written and verbal).
- Preferred but not required: Familiarity with Constant Contact, WordPress, LinkedIn, or Salesforce
NASADAD internships are capped at 35 hours a week and compensated at $17.50 an hour.
