KUT is the leader in the Austin radio market and a flagship station in the national public media landscape. The station is consistently ranked first in listenership in Austin, led by the local broadcast of National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition”.

Purpose

To host local live network news program under the supervision of the KUT Program Director and to produce newscasts and news material such as interviews and reports under the direction of the KUT News Director.

Responsibilities

  • Hosts and runs the radio control board to seamlessly integrate local news and other content into the daily live broadcast of Morning Edition. Writes, edits and delivers short news breaks. Presents show continuity, weather, traffic, breaking news, promotions and other local content during national show breaks.
  • Hosts taped and live interviews, or two-ways, that air during local portions within Morning Edition. Books, researches, conducts and edits those interviews for air. Host news specials and coverage of special events for KUT News.
  • Participates in on-air fundraising and makes special public appearances as assigned by Program Director. Is on call to serve as anchor for special coverage during emergencies and in rotation for weekend editing duties.
  • Reports local news from KUT News for national programming as appropriate, participates in newsroom editorial and planning meetings, and participates in newsroom editing sessions and critiques set up by KUT Managing Editor.
  • Write, produce, and track news stories for air that meet quality and accuracy standards of KUT News. Occasionally report spot news, features, and series work as assigned by Managing Editor. Ensure that all content produced meets KUT standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance. Actively incorporates multiple perspectives and voices into the editorial process. Identify omissions in our coverage and suggest ways to mitigate them.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent professional experience and training.
  • 5 years of experience as an on-air host of a news magazine program.

  • Have experience operating broadcast equipment and managing an audio board during live on-air shifts.
  • Be capable of working under deadline pressure in a live program environment, drawing on creativity and improvisation while maintaining accuracy, objectivity, and composure–all while hitting time posts, forward promoting content, and presenting news.
  • Have a proven record of producing daily news stories and locally relevant features.
  • Be proficient in audio editing with the ability to quickly turn around tape for broadcast.
