Description:
The Manager of Underwriting & Risk Management supports the organization’s financial stability by ensuring accurate, data-driven analysis of pricing, reserving, and risk exposures. This role is responsible for executing actuarial studies, financial forecasts, and risk assessments that inform business decisions across Product, Finance, and Operations. The ideal candidate combines technical expertise with sound judgment and a collaborative approach to ensure alignment between underwriting practices, financial outcomes, and reporting accuracy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Actuarial and Financial Analysis: Develop, execute and maintain actuarial models and financial forecasts to evaluate product pricing, loss trends, and reserve adequacy. Provide insights that support profitability and portfolio stability.
- Operational Support: Collaborate with the Director of Risk Management and cross-functional partners to ensure consistency, transparency, and accuracy in assumptions, methodologies, and data inputs used across underwriting and pricing processes.
- Forecasting and Reporting: Prepare recurring analyses and performance reports, including variance reviews and projection summaries to support decision making across Sales, Finance, and Operations.
- Risk Identification and Assessment: Identify and quantify emerging risks by analyzing performance trends and external market data. Provide analytical support that enhances underwriting precision, product performance and overall profitability.
- Regulatory and Compliance Oversight: Ensure all actuarial and analytical work products meet applicable regulatory and internal governance standards. Maintain thorough documentation to support audit readiness and compliance with industry regulations.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product, Finance, and Operations teams to validate pricing models and ensure underwriting strategies align with business objectives and financial goals.
- Process Improvement: Recommend, develop and implement process enhancements that improve analytical accuracy, operational efficiency and the quality of business insights.
- Team Contribution and Mentorship: Support the professional growth of junior analysts or actuarial staff by providing mentorship, technical guidance and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.
- Influence and Communication: Clearly explains complex risk insights to executives, partners and non-technical stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, or a related field required.
- Progress toward Associate designation (ASA or ACAS) preferred; Fellowship pursuit encouraged but not required.
- 4–7 years of actuarial or risk management experience within insurance, warranty, or financial services.
- Solid understanding of underwriting, pricing, reserving, and risk modeling principles.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks (IFRS 17, Solvency II, NAIC) a plus.
- Clear communicator with the ability to translate complex technical findings into concise, actionable insights.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional partners in a collaborative environment.
- Proficiency with actuarial or statistical tools (e.g., Prophet, AXIS, Emblem) and data programming (e.g., Python, R, SAS, SQL).
- Strong Excel and data visualization capabilities.
